Sworn Oath by Philip Nelson (freedman)

    Personally appeared before me O.H. Howard, agent Bureau R.F. & A.L. for the county aforesaid, Philip Nelson (freedman) who made oath to the following statement, to wit; That on the 14th day of August 1865, he purchased of Capt. W.A. Rankin U.S.A. (or U.S. vols.) at public sale, one grey horse, branded “J.C.” that he paid the said Capt. Rankin therefore the sum of thirty six dollars ($36) and received a bill of sale of the said horse, which bill of sale he now holds.
    That in the month of October 1866 one Capt. Cox of Worth county Ga. Proved to  the satisfaction of Judge Thomas Sp---n, Judge of the County Court of Dougherty County Ga., that the aforesaid horse belonged to him the said Capt. Cox, it having been stolen from his plantation by  U.S. Soldiers.
    That one James Mayo, Deputy Sheriff of Daugherty County, then seized the horse, by order of the said Judge of the County court and delivered him to the said Capt. Cox.
    That he, the affiant suffers a precursory() loss there by that he can not ---- ----.
