DAVIS
Death Of An Exemplary Colored Citizen. - Nathan Davis, who lived near Bartow, in this county, died on the 10th instant. He was an old and respected negro, and known for a number of years as the efficient and effective freight hand at the depot. He won by his universally polite manner and honest deportment the esteem of all around him, and everybody was the friend of Uncle Nathan.   By industry and good management he accumulated property to the amount of near $6,000, and a gentleman who had known him a long time, told us that Joe Brown was no better financier than he was.
Before the war he paid $3,000 for himself, but was nominally the slave of Mr. George Palmer.
When Sherman's raid passed through here, some of his envious enemies - enemies alike to him and all semblance of honest virtue - told them he had plenty of money, and they resorted to sham hanging, etc., but it was all in vain, for he was not to be robbed in any such summary manner.
He has always voted the democratic ticket - kept clear of the Freemen's Savings bank, and was never disturbed at any time by the ku-klux.
He made a will and left M.A. Evans and J.W. Carswell, of Bartow, his executors, to see that his wife enjoyed his property during her lifetime, and then be divided among those of his children who have remained with him. He had forty six children. - Jefferson News and Farmer
