Alice Josephine Chandler Alice Josephine Chandler was born June 21, 1913 in Troy, Mississippi to Joseph Rutledge and Birdie Olivia Spencer. She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Science from Mississippi State University and taught school in Troy, Mississippi and Decatur, Mississippi before coming to Texas in the mid-forties. She earned a Master of Arts Degree in Education from Southern Methodist University. She taught in Grand Prairie for ten years before being appointed to teach art at Sidney Lanier School in Dallas. In 1934 she married Earle C. Thompson in Okolona, Mississippi. They were divorced in 1954. To them two children were born, daughters Barbara (now deceased) and Katheryn, now a resident of Chatsworth, Georgia. Later she married Mr. Virgil Chandler, a fellow teacher. She was active in the Eastern Star organization and served as Worthy Matron of the Love Field Chapter No. 875. She was a member of the Delta Tau chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Women Educators. She was a member of the Highland Park Presbyterian Church, where she was active in the highlander Sunday School Class and, after retirement, the Friday Fellowship Program for Senior Adults. She is survived by her daughter, Katheryn Adams,of Chatsworth, Georgia; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her memorial service will be held in Wynne Chapel at Highland Park Presbyterian Church on Friday, October 17, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Highland Park Presbyterian Foundation, 3821 University Blvd., Dallas, TX 75205.
