Obituary: Mrs. Ora Brackett, (Hamby) of Kelly's Ferry
Road, Rt. 4, passed away at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Nettie
Fox. Surviving her are three daughters, Mrs. Nettie Fox and Mrs. Thelma
Templeton of Chattanooga, and Mrs. Jessie Parker of Resaca, Ga; two
sons, Ben and John Brackett Jr. both of Chattanooga. One brother Charles
Williams of Atlanta, Ga; three sisters, Mrs. C. B. Brookshire and Mrs.
C. L. Creasey of Atlanta, Ga; and Mrs Bertha Jones, Dalton, Ga; also 40
grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be
held at two PM Tuesday at Lookout Valley Baptist Church, with the Revs
B. B. Dawn and Fred Gregg officiating, Interment will be in Boydson
Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Carl Edward Brackett, Roy
Brackett, William B. Thompson, John A. Parker, Eugene Parker. Honorary
pallbearers will be members of the Dorcas Class of Lookout Valley
Baptist Church. The body will be taken to the home of a daughter, Mrs.
Nettie Fox, Monday morning. Arrangements by the National Funeral Home.

Grover, we called him GC, worked in construction most of his life. He
worked out of Birmingham for a Birmingham company, Rust Engineering
& Construction. He worked in Florida quite a bit when south
Florida was developing. My memories of him are scarce but there are a
few. He gave me my first puppy. My parents lived in Bay View, Alabama,
just outside of Birmingham and GC and Aunt Evie lived in Birmingham.
GC got the puppy from a co-worker and they brought it out in the
evening. I had to crawl in the back floor board to get the puppy out
from under the front seat. I was a little less than four years old.
GC chewed tobacco and always had a sharp pocket knife that he used to
cut off a chaw. I can remember thinking just how good that looked. I
was about six then. When I was 14, I bought a plug of Uncle GC's brand
of chewing tobacco for $.12 and on the way home from the store,
walking, I chewed some of it. I don't believe I've ever been so sick
so quick in my life. Of course I survived and didn't tell my parents
what the problem was but that ended my envy of GC Williams.
His daughters, Ophelia and Frances were considerable older than me.
Ophelia was born in the spring of 1913 and my father, her cousin, was
born in the fall of 1913. Ophelia's oldest son is about four years
older than I am. She had another son that is about a year younger than
I am. Frances did not have any children. Both Ophelia and Frances are
dead now.
As time goes on, I may think of other things that would be of interest
to you. One thing that I would like to know is where GC was born and
about when did he move to Alabama. If you know any of this, please let
me know. I guess I saw your grandmother at GC's funeral but that was
in about 1943 or 1944 and I would not have even known who she was.
