By Wm. H. DUMONT
printed in National Gen. Society Quarterly, Vol. 52, part 1, Number. 2, June 1964

Transcribed for Genealogy Trails by K. Torp

There were at least 77 French emigrants to Richmond Co., Georgia during the latter part of the 18th and early 19th centuries, as indicated by the 1850 and 1860 census and tombstone inscriptions and records of the cemeteries of Richmond County. Most of them settled in Augusta, the county seat of Richmond County. Of these, 32 were French refugees from St. Domingo1. Some of the others may also have fled from St. Domingo, but the records do not so indicate.
