LAND GRANTS
RICHMOND COUNTY, GEORGIA, 1784-1789
By Wm. H. Dumont
pub. in the NGSQ, vol. 55, No. 1 March 1967

Transcribed for Genealogy Trails by K. Torp
Although some of these grants were for land in present Columbia
County, a few of them were definitely located in present Richmond County.
Nine grants were issued in 1784 when John Houston was Governor. They were countersigned by David Rees, Clerk of
the Executive Council, or Wm. Freeman, Deputy Clerk. In 1785 when Samuel Elbert was Governor, 88 grants were countersigned
by George Handley, Clerk, with a few by George Walton, Deputy Clerk. There were 3 grants in 1786 when Edward Telfair
was Governor. George Handley was still Clerk. Only one grant for 1789, when George Walton was Governor, was included.
James Meriweather countersigned as Clerk. There are two grant forms with the names of the supposed grantee, but
they were not
signed or dated. These 2 names have been included in the list of 103 names below which have been arranged alphabetically.
