Walton County History Walton County was created on December 15, 1818, located east of Atlanta and named after George Walton who also served as Governor of Georgia for a shot term from 1779-1780. As the 43rd county in Georgia, the land was originally held by both the Cherokee and Creek Indians. With the city of Monroe as it’s capital city, Walton County has been the home to, birthplace of or claimed seven Georgia governors.
