"The Aloha State"
Hawai'i is divided into two groups of islands. The first group
is made up of 124 small islands, which form the northwestern
part of the chain. Wind and water have worn down these islands, leaving only pieces of volcanic rock and islands
made of coral or layers of limestone. The second group consists of eight large islands, which are: Maui, Moloka'i,
Kaho'lawe, Oahu, Hawaii, Kaua'i, Lana'i, and Ni'hau.
Became the 50th state Aug. 21, 1959.
Motto: Ua mau ke ea o ka aina I ka pono
[The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness]

The movement of the Hawaiian royal family from the island of Hawaii
to Maui, and subsequently to Oahu, explains why certain population centers exist where they do today. Lahaina was
the capital until 1845. The largest city, Honolulu, was the one chosen by King Kamehameha III as the capital of
his kingdom because of the natural harbor there, the present-day Honolulu Harbor.
The largest city is the capital, Honolulu, located along the southeast coast of the island of Oahu.
Other populous cities include Hilo, Kane'ohe, Kailua, Pearl City, Waipahu, Kahului, Kailua-Kona, Kihei, and Lihu'e.
