The County Convention
A Large Representation – Convention Harmonous – Ben E Rich for Delegate to the National Convention
The Republican county convention was called or order last Saturday by County Chairman, Hon. John Donaldson, who was made temporary chairman of the convention and Prov. H. G. Fuller was honored with the temporary secretaryship.  The usual committees were selected. Adjournment was taken until 12:30 when the gavel was sounded and the delegates came to order in their places.  The Committee on Permanent Organization and Order of Business reported and Lieut-Col. Thos. R Hamer was recommended for permanent chairman and Nash L. Bennett of Lewisville permanent secretary. The report was adopted.

The Committee on Resolutions introduced the following which was unanimously adopted:

Sec.  1  RESOLVED   That the Republicans of Fremont county, Idaho, in convention assembled, heartily
Endorse the National Republican Administration

Sec.  2  RESOLVED  That Fremont county, in convention assembled, hereby endorse the Republican national administration.  Fremont county is one of the larges and most populous counties in the State of Idaho.  At the last general election it gave 1000 majority for the Republicans.  Fremont county is entitled to representation in the delegates to the Republication national convention therefore be it Resolved by this convention that it is the sense of Fremont county that Ben E. Rich be elected a delegate at Pocatello to the Republican national convention and that he delegates to the State convention at Pocatello are hereby requested to exercise their influence to the utmost to elect him to the national convention.

The election of twenty-three delegates was then proceeded with and the following were elected to go to the Pocatello convention:

Thos. R. Hamer; Geo. Harrigfeld; Chas. A. Smith; Albert Taylor; Conrad Waley; O. P. Soule; r. J. Comstock; W. E. Holly; Albert Heath; Victor Hegsted; Caleb Jones; Sam Harrop; J. Webster; Geo. Cordon; John Donaldson;  J. E. Fogg; J. W. Hart; D Osborn; Harry Cannon; F. A. Pyke;   C. C. Moore;   M. J. Gray;   A. A. Adams.

It was recommended that the Count Central Committee be reorganized and the various delegation proceeded to select from each precinct, a county central committeeman, a list of which will be published later.

Before the close of the convention a resolution in regard to the unjust distribution of the Federal patronage emenating from Blackfoot land office, which had been taken up and passed by the County Executive Committee, was presented by Judge Kelly of Fremont.  Hon. David Osborn of Rexburg, moved that the convention ratify the actions of the County Executive Committee, which was seconded from various parts of the convention.   After a few remarks by Judge Donaldson by way of explaining to the convention the Teton Peak was unjustly deprived of any portion of the Federal patronage, (the publication of land notices) from the Blackfoot Land Office and that all other Republican papers in the county were receiving their share, and one paper in particular, the Chronicle was receiving all the notices published St. Anthony, the resolution was passed by the entire vote of the convention.  The resolution as passed is as follows:

RESOLVED   That it is the sense of this committee that the Federal patronage arising from the Government Land Office at Blackfoot is unjustly deprived from our recognized party organ. “The Teton Peak” and we demand that action be taken whereby this matter may be remedied; and that a copy of this resolution be sent to our National Committeeman and State Chairman and that they be requested to use their influence and endeavors to secure for our official organ that patronage to which it is justly entitled.

The convention then adjourned.

Taking into consideration the fact that this convention was comparatively of little consequence, the Republicans of Fremont county are to be congratulated upon the very large attendance.  Nearly every precinct was represented and the total number of delegates in attendance was about 190.  It was remarked by some of our Democratic friends that the Republicans are still in evidence and if that convention is a forecast of the patriotism and enthusiasm contained within the Republican ranks this year, it will be of little use for the Democrats to hold a convention at all.

A telephone message from Blackfoot says that the Bingham county convention in session there instructed for Judge Stevens for delegate to the National Convention from the Sixth district. As figured there, Judge Stevens has Bingham, Lemhi and Custer counties, a total of 29 delegates against Fremont county, 23 delegates for Ben E. Rich. This does not look very promising for Fremont country’s candidate.

NEW CITY COUNCIL
Members Take Their Seats of Office
Monday evening the city council of St. Anthony met for the purpose of transacting regular routine business and looking after the city’s interest. The old council handed over the reigns of government to the newly elected members, who lost no time in getting busy. The mayor succeeds himself, though the council is composed of men who have not served in their present official capacity for some years past. However it must be said to their credit, they are certainly representative business men, and have excellent ideas regarding municipal affairs.

The personnel of the new council is as follows: James G. Gwinn, mayor. Councilmen, first ward—W. W. Youmans and E. D. Stevenson; second ward—L. S. Borrows and W. D. Yager; third ward—G. N. Swartz and Jno. W. Miller; clerk—W. A. Calderhead; surveyor—I. W. Kinney; police judge—B. H. Miller; treasurer; T. C. Patton.
