NORTH IDAHO EDITOR CALLED BY REAPER
J. T. Scott, Founder and Editor of Coeur d'Alene Press Passes Away
COEUR D'ALENE, Ida. -- J. T. Scott, founder and editor of the
Coeur d'Alene Press, died here late Sunday night, after a short illness
caused by hardening of the arteries about the heart. The funeral will
be held Tuesday and the body will be buried here.
Mr. Scott was a native of Ohio. He was born in 1856. In 1883 he founded
the Dickenson, N. D., Press; in 1892, the Coeur d'Alene Weekly Press,
and, in 1906, the daily. He was a member of the Sixth Idaho house and
the first Republican Montana convention. He was a Silver Democrat and a
supporter of Bryan at one time but later returned to straight
Republicanism and has been anti-Roosevelt since the 1912 bolt which
brought the birth of the Progressive party. He was against prohibition
but fought intemperance in drink and all other things. He is survived
by a widow, his sisters and a niece.
The Coeur d'Alene Chamber of Commerce adopted resolutions in recognition of Mr. Scott's constructive work.
Faced Death With Smile
Mr. Scott faced death with a smile. After his physician, answering his
query, said that nothing more could be done, the sick man said, "Then
I'll turn over and go to sleep. Good night, all," he bade his loved
ones, and quietly and peacefully breathed his last.
Commenting on the death of Charles Frohman, drowned in the Lusitania
catastrophe, Mr. Scott, it is believed, wrote into his editorial
something of his own view of death. He said:
"Before he went down with the Lusitania, Charles Frohman, the
well-known theatrical and movie magnate, was talking to a companion and
coolly remarked, 'Why fear death; it is the most beautiful adventure in
life.' Here is a life lesson in a few words which may well be
remembered by anyone with the nobleness of character and courage to
meet fate without a quiver. We know nothing of Mr. Frohman's religious
creed or beliefs, or whether he had any well defined ideas of the
future, but one who can meet death with those words on his lips is a
character whose life is of the highest order of fearless nobility. A
clear consciousness of having done his best is the only condition under
which one in the vigorous manhood of health, and life with its
pleasures and future before him, can give up with such beautiful
expressions. Charles Frohman's was a noble character and his death
message will be a comfort to many persons when they pass through the
valley and are nearing the end. "Why fear death; it is the most
beautiful adventure in life."
