Navy CDR Dan Shanower was killed on September 11, 2001 in the attack on the Pentagon.

Sgt. Jeannette Winters, United States Army, of Chicago died January 9, 2002 in Pakistan in an airplane accident.
Army PVT James Ebbers was killed due to gunshot wound on October 14, 2002 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Cpt Ryan Beaupre, United States Marines, of St. Anne was killed during a helicopter crash in Kuwait on March 20, 2003. Beaupre was assigned to the Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 268, 3d Marine Aircraft Wing, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

U.S. Marine Cpl. Brian Kennedy was killed in Kuwait in aircraft accident on March 20, 2003. He was assigned to the Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 268, 3d Marine Aircraft Wing, Camp Pendleton, Calif. He grew up in Evanston.

Spc. Brandon Rowe of Roscoe was killed in Iraq on March 31, 2003. He was a member of the Army's 101st Airborne Division.
Spc. Brandon J. Rowe, 20, was assigned to C Company, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky. He was killed in action on March 31, 2003, in Ayyub, Iraq, by enemy artillery. Rowe was from Roscoe.

Air Force Lt. Col. John Stein was killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan on March 23, 2003.

Cpl. Evan James, 20, of the United States Marines was killed in action on March 24, 2003 in Iraq. He was a Marine Reservist from Peoria.

Staff Sgt Jacob L. Frazier, 24, was killed in action in Afghanistan on March 29, 2003. He was assigned to the 169th Air Support Operations Squadron, 182nd Airlift Wing, Illinois Air National Guard.

Army Spc. Rachael A. Lacy of Lynwood died, April 3, 2003 as a result of a vaccination for smallpox. She was getting ready to deploy with her unit to Iraq.

Marine 1st Sgt Edward Smith, 38, of Chicago was died April 5, 2003 in Doha, Qatar as a result of wounds received in action a day earlier. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Army Staff Sgt Lincoln Hollinsaid, 27, of Malden, was killed in a grenade attack in Iraq on April 7, 2003. He was assigned to B Company, 11th Engineer Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga.

Lance Cpl. Jakub Kowalik of Schaumburg was killed on May 12, 2003 when ordnance he was handling exploded. He was assigned to the 1st Maintenance Battalion, 1st Force Service Support Group, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Lance Cpl. Nicholas Brian Kleiboeker, 19, of Irvington was killed May 13 near Al Hillah, Iraq, when the munitions bunker he was working in caught fire and exploded. He was assigned to the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Marine Corps 1st Lt Timothy Ryan of North Aurora was killed on May 19, 2003 when his helicopter crashed in a canal about 60 miles south of Baghdad. He was assigned to Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 364, Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Army Staff Sgt. Andrew R. Pokorny, 30, of Naperville was killed in Iraq on June 13, 2003 when his armored personnel carrier threw a track causing the vehicle to roll over. He was assigned to 3rd Air Defense Artillery, 3rd Armor Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colo.

Army Spc. Cory Hubbell , 20, of Urbana died on June 26, 2003 in Camden Yards, Kuwait. Hubbell died from a non-combat related cause. He was assigned to Company B, 46th Engineer Battalion, Fort Rucker, Ala. Mother: Connie Sue Bickers of St. Joseph
Army Pvt. Matthew D. Bush, 20, of East Alton, Ill., died on Aug. 8, 2003 in Camp Caldwell, Iraq. A fellow soldier tried to wake Bush and noticed he was not breathing. Bush was assigned to F Troop, 1st Squadron, 10th Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas.

Army Spc. Brandon Ramsey, 21, of Calumet City died on Aug. 8, 2003 in Tallil, Iraq. Ramsey was part of a convoy escort mission when the vehicle he was in rolled over during a chase and fatally injured him.

Army Pfc Christopher Sisson, 20, of Oak Park died in Iraq due to helicopter crash on Sept. 2, 2003. Sisson was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 325th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Fort Bragg, N.C.

Army Spc. Ryan G. Carlock, 25, of Macomb was killed on Sept. 9, 2003 near Baghdad, Iraq. Carlock died of injuries sustained when his fuel truck was attacked. He was assigned to the 416th Transportation Company, 260th Quartermaster Battalion, Hunter Army Airfield, Ga.

1st Lt. Brian Slavenas, 30, of Genoa, was killed on November 2, 2003 in Iraq when a surface-to-air missile struck his CH-47 aircraft while transporting troops.

Army Pvt. Scott M. Tyrrell, 21, of Sterling died on Nov. 20, 2003 at Brooke Army Medical Center, in San Antonio, Texas, of wounds received on Nov. 14 in Tikrit, Iraq. Tyrrell was at an ammunition point when it caught on fire.

Staff Sgt. Michael J. Sutter, 28, of Tinley Park, Ill., was killed Dec. 26, 2003 in Baqubah, Iraq. Sutter was attempting to render safe an improved explosive device when it detonated. Sutter was assigned to the 745th Ordnance Company, 79th Ordnance Battalion, Army National Guard, based in Grayling, Mich.
