August Bernhardt


August Bernhardt was born December 12, 1833 at Gross Kottern, Thuringia. After preliminary studies he was sent by his parents to the teachers seminary in Gotha to be trained for the teacher's profession. In 1856 he came to Quincy and became a teacher at the parochial school of Salem congregation, where he was a diligent teacher. After 4 years he resigned his position and gave private instruction as a music teacher. For a time he was also a teacher at the parochial of the St. Peter's Evangelical-Lutheran congregation. Later he became director of the Quincy Liederkranz (choral society). Here he married Louise Weisenborn, who was born December 21, 1836 at Niederdorla, near Mühlhausen, Thüringia. She came with her parents to Quincy 1844. He was a man of ideal disposition. He died March 26, 1872; his wife departed this life Decemeber 25, 1892. A daughter, Mrs. Hulda Koch, lives in Warsaw, Illinois.
