David Reuter


David Reuter was born September 21, 1833 at Karlsruhe, Baden, came in 1835 with his parents to this country, where the family settled in St. Louis. Later he learned the cooper's trade in his brother's workshop and also worked in Belcher's sugar refinery. In 1855 he came to Quincy and was married here September 3, 1857 to Elisabeth Schuchmann, a daughter of the old pioneer Heinrich Schuchmann who came to Quincy at the beginning of the thirties. For many years he was a rafter on the Mississippi and also acted as captain of the raft. "Old Lionhead." During the war he served in Company H, 43rd Illinois Regiment. He died March 13, 1895 after his wife had preceded him in death June 17, 1892. Surviving are sons Eduard, Wilhelm, David, Walter and Robert and daughters Elisabeth, wife of Heinrich Merkel and Emma, wife of Karl Krüger.
