Heinrich Freiburg

Heinrich Freiburg was born October 18, 1835 at Allendorf, Westphalia, a son of Joseph Freiburg and his wife Margarethe nee Schulte, learned the shoemaker's trade in Iserlohnn. In 1855 he came to this country, landing in New Orleans in Novemeber. There he stayed until May 1856, when he traveled upstream and settled in Quincy. Here he worked as a journeyman until 1862; then he himself opened a shoe store and ran the business until 1879. In 1882 he founded a shoe factory with a few machines and did mostly handwork. Initially the undertaking was successful. Then came the competition of the large factories, which were equipped with the newest improved machines. Small factories could not make it against them and finally had to give up the fight. Today Heinrich manages the Crispin Shoe Factory where he does customer service and repairs and has so far also been successful. On January 21, 1862 he married Josephine Meyer, a daughter of the old pioneer Christoph Meyer and his wife Angela nee Borstadt who had come to Quincy as early as 1837. Sons are Joseph, Christoph, and Alphons. Daughters are Veronika, wife of Joseph Geers; Maria, wife of Bernhard Brinks; Agnes, wife of Lorenz Wavering; as well as Rosa and Lidwina Freiburg.

This family is my husband's direct line. Alphonse Freiburg married Lucia Boerder. Alphonse and Lucia are my husband's great grandparents. If you would like further information on this family, please email me.
