Heinrich Scheid


Heinrich Scheid was born September 26, 1826 at Dauborn, Linburg an den Lahn, Nassau, learned the cooper's trade in the old country and emigrated to America in 1853. The voyage by sailing vessel lasted from August 27 to October 18, the day he landed in New York. From there he praticed his trade for some time and then together with Ernst Werner operated a distillery in "Possum Hollow" near Seehorn in this county. For a time he was also a malster at Heinrich Ruff's Bluff brewery north of Quincy. He farmed for some years in the vicinity of Clarksville, Missouri. On December 11, 1856 he was married in Quincy to Helene Merker, who was born March 7, 1837 in Gross Biberau, Hesse, and came to Quincy in 1854. His wife died May 8, 1882 in Kansas City, Kansas; he died in Quincy September 18, 1887. Wilhelm Scheid, a son of the couple, born in Quincy May 20, 1859, served as a member of the police force for 11 years and was then elected police judge for four years in the spring of 1903. Another son, Benjamin Scheid, lives in St. Louis. A daughter, Josie, is the wife of the baker Heinrich Schwalb in Avon, Illinois; another daughter Dorothea Scheid, lives in Quincy.
