Johannes Harscher


Johannes Harscher was born October 29, 1840 in Dumen, Württemburg, and came with his parents to the United States in 1844, where the family settled near Virginia, Cass County, Illinois. Johannes, who was confirmed in the spring of 1855, helped his father on the farm until 1856. Then he entered the Lutheran Seminary in Springfield, Illinois to prepare for the teacher's program; later he also took a business course in Chicago. In 1873 he was called to the parochial school of the German St. Peter's Evangelical congregation in Quincy where he taught for fourteen years with tireless energy until the state of his health forced him to lay down his position. In 1878 he married Miss Meta Liese, the oldest daughter of Pastor Liese, at the time pastor of St. Peter's congregation. He died June 1, 1902. His widow, two sons and four daughters are still amongh the living. A daughter Hulda is the wife of Professor Schuller, teacher at St. Pauls' College in Concordia, Missouri.
