Johann Heinrich Heitland

Johann Heinrich Heitland was born March 11, 1814 at Heepen near Bielefeld, Westphalia, learned linen weaving in the old country. There he married Henriette Pankoke. In the fall of 1852 the family emigrated and came to this country via New Orleans. The voyage over sea lasted nine weeks; the goal was Quincy, where they died of pneumonia, which had been contracted on the voyage. His wife, also born in 1814, died at Liberty in this county in 1863. Heinrich Heitland, born in the old country on January 25, 1845, son of the above-mentioned couple, learned the building trade from Friedrich Reinecker. During the war he served in the 148th Illinois Regiment. After the war he again devoted himself to his trade and is now operating a voluminous trade in fireplaces, fireplace screens, glazed tiles for floors, etc. His sons, John and Jesse, are in the business with their father. A daughter of Johann Heinrich Heitland lives at Fontanelle, Nebraska, namely Mrs. Christine Ruwe; another daughter, Mrs. Hannah Liebig, lives in Quincy.
