Johann Heinrich Tushaus


Johann Heinrich Tushaus was born March 31, 1830 at Südlohn, Westphalia, came with his parents to the United States in 1844. The family landed in New Orleans and traveled from there direct to Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1845 he moved to Quincy. After he was employed for a number of years with S. and W.B. Thayer, he entered into a business association with Johann Altmix and operated a business in cloth and material goods in 1859 on Eleventh and Broadway. In 1865 he built a place of business on 713 Hampshire, where he operated a cloth business for many years. In 1852 he married Maria Anna Scheiner. His wife died January 13, 1891; he departed this life November 16, 1894. Johann Heinrich was a true Westphalian, a man of the old German type. Five children of the couple are still living: Mrs. William Weisenhorn, Mrs. F.B. Ricker, Thomas L. Tushaus, Mrs. Joseph Michael, all of Quincy, and Joseph H. of St. Joseph, Missouri.
