Matthias Ohnemus
On November 15, 1810 Matthias Ohnemus
was born in Rust, Ettenheim, Baden, where his father and also his
grandfather had been smiths and wagon makers. Matthias Ohnemus learned
there the handwork of a saddler and harness maker. He came to the United
States in 1834 where he first settled in Louisville, Kentucky and there
in 1835 he married Theresia Weber, who was born October 29,1810 in
Ringsheim, Ettenheim, Baden. The couple came to Quincy in 1835 where
Ohnemus was occupied many years with his handwork. During the gold Rush,
he prepared two wagons to undertake the trip to California. He planted
the first vineyard in Quincy, and he also ran for a while a butcher
shop. He died September 16, 1870, the wife on December 5, 1900. Of the
children, those still living are a son Georg Ohnemus, a tinsmith in
Quincy, Mrs. Marie P. Kreitz in Kansas City, Sister Servatia of the
Order of Notre Dame in Milwaukee, Wis., Theresia Tenk, Mrs. Elisabeth
Glahn, and Mrs. Anna Glass in Quincy.
