CAUBLE SCHOOL

Alexander County/Illinois Genealogy Trails

This school was located northwest of Elco. It was a one-room school and was built in 1861. It fell into decay many years ago. There is not even a road to it now. One teacher that is known to have taught there was a Mr. E. C. Cowan. He was brutally assaulted by two boys in January 1898. In a newspaper article in the Jonesboro Gazette it was stated that Mr. Cowan was a young man of excellent reputation and had many friends in the locality. He was from Williamson County. The boys were supposedly convicted of the crime and sent to prison. It was not clear if Mr. Cowan ever totally recovered. He was about 24 years old at the time.

Another teacher was Miss Elsie Cauble. She taught one year there in the early 1900s. She would ride her horse from the Cauble farm on the Delta Road across her Uncle Fred Cauble's place and to the school.
