ELCO CONSTABLE

About 1916-17 Elco had a local law enforcement officer called a Constable. This picture is of William Logan Thompson, son of the Civil War Soldier, John T. Thompson. William was born in or near Elco on June 12, 1887. He was widely known as "Bill Grapes" for eating the wild grapes that grew in the woods around Elco. He spent considerable time "prospecting" in the woods.

Notice his gun strapped to his waist. Also notice on the left side of the picture an old car or truck.

The story is related by his nephew, Bobbie Thompson, who lives just north of Elco near Mill Creek that when he was a small child (he currently is 79 years old), he and some of his siblings had diptheria and his uncle, Bill Grapes Thompson came to post quarantine signs on their house, which was located just north of the grade school on the west side of the then gravel road. However, Bobbie's father, John Thompson, would not allow his brother the Elco Constable to post the signs.
