HARGIS CEMETERY
Alexander County/Illinois Genealogy Trails

Picture contributed by Paula Haas
(The graves pictured are of Childers children who died young.)
This cemetery is located one
mile off the Olive Branch-Tamms Road on Wolf Creek Road. It is on
a high ridge behind the first house on the right. There are over
two hundred graves with many unmarked. If you have names and
dates of family not mentioned, please email me.
As you can see from the picture this cemetery is being neglected and it
is very difficult to find. If any efforts are made to restore it,
please send me an after picture.

Note: Great-great-great-grandson, Duane Hargis sent the following statement: In the genealogy of Richard Hargis, father of Dennis, it gives Dennis' birth date as before Oct. 17, 1785. Dennis was teaching school at Egypt School in Alexander Co., IL and living in the home of his youngest son, D. D. C. Hargis, on the homeplace they homesteaded in 1849. He would walk over the hill behind the house where they lived to teach school. He came home one afternoon and said he had found the place where he wanted to be buried when he died. When asked where it was. He said that it was on top of the hill behind the house. When he died he was the first one to be buried on the hill. It is known as the Hargis Cemetery.
