Cairo, IL.--DEATH
OF HENRY L. HALLIDAY--Died, at his home in this
city, Monday, Sept. 2, at 7:45 p.m., after an illness of two
weeks duration with typhoid malarial fever. Mr. Henry Laing
Halliday, in the 54th year of his age.
Mr. Halliday had been in very precarious health for some
years. He had been compelled to visit Colorado and other
health resorts. But recently his health had been much
better. He had gained flesh, was stronger and looked much
better. About two weeks ago he went north to join his
family at Evanston, where he contracted a severe cold. It
developed into typhoid malarial fever, which withstood all the
efforts of the highest medical skill, and culminated in his death
Monday evening.
Mr. Halliday was born in Pomeroy, Ohio, March 7, 1842. He
came with his parents to Wayne county, Ill., in 1856. In
1859, he left home to engage in service as a clerk upon an Ohio
river steamboat.
Soon after the war broke out he came to Cairo and became a member
of the firm of Halliday Brothers and here he has lived for the
past thirty-three years. For many years he has had charge
of the immense grain and milling business of the firm of Halliday
Brothers. On the first of July, 1895, that firm was
dissolved as we are informed and he became the sole owner and
proprietor of the Halliday mill and warehouse and of the immense
grain and milling business which had formerly been carried on by
Halliday Brothers, under the name of the H. L. Halliday Milling
Company. He had planned to greatly enlarge the business in
the near future. He was vice-president of the City National
Bank.
On the 7th of March, 1867, he married Miss Laura Evans, who with
four children, two daughters, both married, and two sons, now
survive him.
The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at the family residence,
Dr. F. P. Davenport, of Memphis, officiating. A large
number of friends followed the remains to their last resting
place at Beech Grove Cemetery. --From The
Cairo Weekly Citizen, Thursday, Sept. 5, 1895, contributed by

Cairo, IL.--DEATH CLAIMS SAMUEL
HASTINGS--SUCCUMBED LAST NIGHT TO AILMENT FROM WHICH
HE SUFFERED FOR TWO MONTHS--END CAME AT 9:45 O'CLOCK
P.M.--Stricken With Apoplexy on July 24th. Little Hope of
His Permanent Recovery Had Been Entertained Since.
Samuel Hastings, president of the Cairo Board of Trade and one of
the leading citizens of Cairo in influence and public spirit,
passed away last night at 9:45 o'clock at his home on upper
Washington avenue, surrounded by his family.
His death was not unexpected. On July 24th last he was
stricken with apoplexy and since then there had been little
ground for hope of his permanent recovery. A trip to
Manitou Springs, Colo., was taken in hope that the change would
bring relief and recovery, but it did not have the desired effect
and two weeks ago he was brought back and since then he has been
gradually sinking.
Samuel Hastings was born in Noble County Ohio, March 31,
1850. He was the son of Hezekiah and Anna (Ball) Hastings,
both of whom were born in Ohio. His father for many years
followed merchandising, farming and stock raising with marked
success and is still hale and hearty at the advanced age of 80
years. His mother, daughter of Jonas Ball, died in Illinois
in 1885. The paternal grandfather was Samuel Hasting of
English birth, who upon coming to the United States located in
Ohio.
Samuel Hastings was the oldest of nine children. Those
living are Noah H., James W., Jonas, Ira, Cora,
Nannie. Noah and Jonas are farmers in Clay County,
Ill.: James is a merchant in New Orleans; Ira is located in
Cairo; Cora is an artist and photographer in Denver, Colo.,
Nannie is the wife of Rev. A. S. Gard, a Methodist minister of
Steamboat Landing, Colo. At the age of 5 years Samuel moved
with his parents to Jasper County, Ill., where he was reared on a
farm. After graduating from McKendree College, Lebanon,
Ill., in 1872, he taught school for three years in Clay County,
Ill. For the next five years he devoted his time and energy
to stockraising and farming in that county. In January,
1884, he removed to Cairo, where for the next seven years he was
associated with the wholesale feed firm of Thistlewood and
Company, being the manager of the business until 1890.
During this time Mr. Thistlewood, the senior member of the firm,
was in Kansas. In 1891 Mr. Hastings embarked in the
wholesale feed business for himself, since which time he built up
a large and lucrative business in the buying and selling of hay,
oats, and corn. Because of his success and prominence he
became a leading member of the Board of Trade. In politics
he was a Republican. For four of the six years that he
served on the board of county commissioners, he was chairman;
served as alderman for two years; he was for four years a member
of the Board of Trustees of the Southern Illinois Hospital for the Insane at Anna. He was a member
of the Methodist church and took an active part in religious
affairs. On Sept. 24, 1876, he married Miss Anise Burney,
of Clay County, Ill., and to this union four children have been
born; Leila May, Anna Maud, Oris B. and Mary Alice.
In the death of Samuel Hastings Cairo has suffered an irreparable
loss. As county commissioner, as alderman, as park
commissioner, he was just what he was as a private citizen, a
broad-guaged, public-spirited man, who was fair in all his
dealings, liberal in all of his views, and ever actuated by the
highest motives in all of his actions. He was never a
self-seeker. His modesty was one of his strong
characteristics. Yet his personality was such that he was sought
in every movement for the public good, because his opinions were
sound, his judgment good and his influence potent. He was a
man Cairo can ill afford to lose.
The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at the residence at
1:15 o'clock and the train will leave foot of Eighteenth street
for Beech Grove cemetery at 2:45 p.m.
Mr. Hastings has a brother in New Orleans but on account of the
quarantine he will be unable to attend the funeral.
Col. L. Krughoff of Nashville, Ill. and Congressman Chapman of
Vienna, Ill., two old friends of the deceased, will be here to
attend the funeral.
--From The Cairo Evening Citizen, Thursday,
September 21, 1905, contributed by Anna Shelton. (Note: New
Orleans was under quarantine during this time for a Yellow Fever
epidemic.)

Daniel Hehl was born in Darmstadt, Germany, November 25, 1825. He came to Cairo in the early 50's and has lived here since, working at the shoemaker's trade. He married Mrs. Margaret Smith whose death occurred nearly twenty years ago. Illness--Death relieved the sufferings of MRS. RAYMOND
HENDERSON, at St. Mary's Infirmary about 3 o'clock
this morning. The deceased has been in poor health for several
months and gradually growing worse, and for several weeks prior
to her death, her relatives and friends received little
encouragement over her condition.
Mrs. Henderson was the eldest daugter of Mr. Charles R. Stuart,
secretary of the Cairo Commercial Club and was a popular young
lady of this city, being one of the leading factors in Cairo
society before her ill health. She was 25 years of age.
She is survived by her husband, Mr. Raymond Henderson, a

Cairo, IL.--GEORGE HENDRICKS
DEAD--The Ex-City Attorney Passes Away Suddenly Tuesday Morning--
The city was startled Tuesday morning by the announcement that
GEORGE W. HENDRICKS, JR., had just passed away at
7:30 a.m. The fact that he was seriously ill was not
generally known. He had been confined to his house about
one week with inflamatory rheumatism, but no apprehension was
felt. It seems that he had suffered somewhat from a trouble
at his heart for some years. He returned from a business
trip to Arkansas some ten days ago and had not felt well since
that time. His system was probably filled with malaria. On
Sunday he had a very high fever and was delirious. Toward
the last he would be better and then worse. On Monday his
case was very hopeful but he was delirious in the night and early
Tuesday morning his condition was desperate. The
complication of diseases baffled all human skill, and he died at
7:30 a.m.
Mr. Hendricks came to Cairo with his father's family from Memphis
in 1862, when he was a child. He grew up here and received
his education in our public schools. He graduated from our
High School in 1874, and immediately studied law in the office of
Linegar & Lansden. He was admitted to the bar in 1876.
Since that time he has been engaged in the practice of law.
He has been city attorney for the past four years and was
defeated for the same position at the April election. He
leaves a wife and little daughter. He had not accumulated
much property, but he had $5,000 insurance upon his life in an
Odd Fellows company. He owned a fine little homestead on
Sycamore street, but it was under mortgage to one of our building
and loan associations. His life insurance will save the
homestead to his widow and will give her a good start
beside. She is an excellent singer and will be able to do
something for herself.
The funeral occurs this afternoon. His brother, Wm. E.
Hendricks, is here from Dodge City, Kansas. The members of
the bar met at the court house yesterday afternoon and adopted
appropriate resolutions and paid a suitable tribute to his
memory. He will be buried under the auspices of Safford
lodge, I. O. O. F. --From The Cairo Weekly Citizen, Thursday,
June 18, 1891, contributed by Anna Shelton. (Note: George
Hendricks is buried in the Cairo City Cemetery at Villa Ridge.
Birth date on the stone is 29 April 1856, death date is 16 June,
1891)
