Illinois Soldiers who died at Andersonville Prison

Originally known as Camp Sumter and located near Americus, GA, Andersonville Prison has become one of the most notorious of all of the Civil War prison camps. Operating for 14 months between 1864 and 1865, it was originally set up to contain 10,000 men, but held close to 33,000 men at its busiest. 45,613 Union prisoners passed through its gates, with Illinois soldiers comprising over 3,500 of those. Almost 13,000 of the 45,000+ died, and approximately 900 of those were Illinois soldiers. Most of the deaths occurred during August to December, 1864, when prisoners died at a rate of approximately 100 per day. This terrible loss of life happened for a number of reasons - partly due to the Confederacy’s just not having the resources to feed, clothe and medicate so many thousands of individuals, and partly due to the cessation of the prisoner exchanges which had gone on up until that time, leaving both sides' prisoners to their fates.

Union soldiers were not the only ones to perish at Andersonville... the Confederate soldiers who acted as their guards suffered from the same diseases and illnesses as the prisoners. Out of the more than 1000 Confederate guards, 226 of them died before the prison was closed in 1865, with many of their names remaining "unknown". Since this topic is beyond the scope of this website (being that they were not from Illinois), you can read more about them on
this page at Kevin Frye's website.

Map of Andersonville
hand-drawn by prisoner R.K. Sneden in 1864
.

"Illustrates the layout of Andersonville Camp, as Sneden refers to the prison, and the surrounding area where Confederate guard troops of the 1st Florida Battery were stationed including the headquarters of Captain Henry Wirz, roads in and out, topographical features such as swampland, a graveyard presumed to be connected with the prison, and "Anderson Village."
[Library of Congress]

Mr. Sneden revised his map after his release, and the Library of Congress has a copy of that online also (the website says the original is in the Virginia Historical Society's possession). The Library of Congress website notes that the following was written on the revised map:

Bottom margin of the map:

"During August the Union prisoners numbered 31,678, of whom 1,693 were in Hospital. 2,993 died in August. There were 31,693 prisoners, AUG 31st.
Number of prisoners shot by Rebel guard 300.
Number buried in graveyard 12,729."

The following is a list of the Illinois Soldiers who died at Andersonville Prison, compiled from various sources. The National Park Services' database provided the majority of the data, with other online databases being used to fill in extra factual information for individual soldiers.
