Eliza Ann Stouffer & Samuel J. Buckwalter

Samuel J. Buckwalter was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania 11 February 1821 and married Eliza Ann Stouffer 24 September 1848 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. They came to Carroll County, Illinois from Coventry Twp., Chester County, Pennsylvania in the Spring of 1856; making the trip overland. Family-lore indicates that Eliza's prized dishes made the journey without breaking a piece. They arrived in Carroll County with children: William, Ben and Henry Clayton and purchased a farm in Woodland Township. (Emma Delilah died and is buried in Pennsylvania.)

Samuel was a stone mason by trade and built the mausoleum that can be seen in Oak Hill Cemetery from Market Street in Mt Carroll, Illinois. He also laid the foundation of the old Academy building there as well as other buildings in the area.

To this union in Carroll County were born: Samuel Marion, Sussan Catherine, Mary Elizabeth, Ida Ann, Sarah Elizabeth, Lilly May, Jacob Howard and Samuel Elijah.

Samuel died at the home of his son, Rev. John Logan Buckwalter in Mt Carroll, Illinois at 7:25 PM, Tuesday, 17 March 1908 where he had spent the last year of his life.

Eliza Ann Stouffer was born 14 Nov 1831 in Chester County, Pennsylvania and preceeded Samuel in death on 7 Apr 1903 in Carroll County.

Samuel and his wife lay side by side in Woodland Cemetery, Woodland Twp., Carroll County, Illinois. At the time of his passing he left 48 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
