RALPH EATON


Ralph E. Eaton State's Attorney for Carroll County, was elected to this office Dec. 4, 1888. His lifelong interests have centered in Northern Illinois, as it was here he was born in Pleaant Valley Township, Jo Daviess County, May 11, 1864. He is thus only twenty-five years of age, and it must be admitted has made a good record for one of his years. After leaving the primary school of his boyhood he entered the High School at savanna, and after completing his studies in that institution, took up a higher course in the College at Fulton, from which he was graduated with the degree of B.S. in the month of June, 1884.

Our subject entered upont he study of law at Mt. Carroll in the office of Hon. J.M. Hunter, and was admitted to the bar in May, 1887. He began the practice of his profession in Mt. Carroll and has already gained an enviable reputation as an able attorney and conscientious practitioner. He is a stanch support of Republican principles, and a young man of decided views, with strong indications of making his mark in the world.

On the 6th of March 1886, Mr. Eaton was united in marriage with Miss Lucy M. Vipond, the wedding taking place at the bride's home in Morseville. Mrs. Eaton was born in Stockton Township, Jo Davies County August 1870 and is the daughter of Isaac and catharine Vipond who were natives of NY and are now residents of Freeport IL, where the father is engaged as a wagon manufacturer. Mr. and Mrs. Vipond reside on Lincoln avenue and number their friends and acquaintances among its best people. Mr. Eaton socially is identified with the Masonic fraternity.

Daniel Eaton, the father of our subject was born in Oswego NY and lived there until a young man 21 years of age. He then came to IL and sojourned for a time in Savanna and in1849 was seized with the California gold fever, and set out for the Pacific Slope. He spent four or five years searching for the yellow ore; then returning to JoDaviess County, purchased a tract of improved land and occupied it for some years. In the meantime he effected other improvements, then sold out, and purchased land in Pleasant Valley Township, where he lived until about 1880. Finally he removed to Savanna and died in 1882 at the age of 48 years.

The mother of our subject was in her girlhood, Miss Harriet House. She also was born in Oswego NY and when a child 6 years of age came to Northern IL with her father, Ransom House who was one of the earliest pioneers of Jo Daviess County. He died at his home in Pleasant Valley, in September 1884, at the age of 73 years. He had taken up Government land, which he converted into a good homestead and became prominent in his community, holding the various school offices of the district, and encouraging all enterprises projected for the general good of the people.

To the parents of our subject there were born four children and Ralph E. was the second of the family. The others were Flora E, now Mrs. McKenzie, Earl H. and Walter S. Mrs Harriet (House) Eaton is still living at the old homestead, in Jo Daviess County and her other children are located, Mrs. McKenzie in Elizabeth IL adn earl and Walter live with their mother.
