ANDREW WELLS

Andrew Wells arrived in Carroll County, Illinois sometime between 1852 and June 1853.

He had been born to John Wells and Sarah "Sally" Edwards on 28 March 1824 in Pike County, Missouri. In 1848 he resided in Logan County, where he married Amanda Hill, who was born in 1826. She died within the first year of their marriage of their marriage of consumption.

On 28 April 1850 he united in marriage to Eliza Ridgeway, the daughter of Edward Ridgeway and Ann Cantrell. Eliza was born on 9 April 1833 in Sangamon County, Illinois. They resided in Logan County where their first son Edward was born 24 February 1851 and died on 20 Sept. or Nov. 1852.

Andrew farmed in Carroll County, having particular interests in horses. He served in Co. C, 92nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry. While in the Franklin, Tennessee area he contracted typhoid and remained in a field hospital for a long time. It was during this time that he got a very large abcess (according to a doctor within my family, all indications are this started with a bed sore, left unattended, developed into a situation where it became so massive that he was partially crippled the rest of his life). After his medical discharge he returned home where he kept bees, as due to his disability he could no longer manage big animals.

Andrew and Eliza's children were all born in Carroll County.
