Tax List 1878
Contributed by John Sharp

Carroll County Herald 19 April 1878

Below is the 1877 unpaid or late tax list for Cherry Grove Twp which was
published in the Carroll County Herald April 19, 1878. The columns are as
follows: Lot Number, Tax Book Number & Tax due. Tax lists such as these are
useful to historians and genealogists since they can provide information as
to an individual’s land ownership and relative wealth in any given year.
Then as now, county taxes, were often paid on or after the official due
date. This is particularly true of the 19th century where in farming
community’s such as Carroll County ready cash was scarce or in short supply.
As a consequence farmers and many merchants often had to wait till the
livestock and crops were to market in order to pay their bills. In the
19th century, tax collection efforts, were still in their infancy and
computerized record keeping and billing were, mercifully still nearly a
century away.

Notification of taxes due in the 19th century communities was typically accomplished by inserted due notices in to local papers, such as the Carroll County Herald which had a wide circulation and distribution. The notation below was originally on the bottom of the page 4.
The above and forgoing is a correct list of lands, city village and lots of Carroll County and State of Illinois on which taxes remain due and unpaid for the year herein set forth to wit., One Thousand Eight Hundred And Seventy-Seven.
