This photo, created from an old 2 1/2 x 4" negative is of
John Klingler, my father, in his baseball uniform (right).
I have memories of us going to Old Mill Park where he played for the
Savanna baseball team, cars parked all around the diamond, but I had no
real memories of him in the uniform.
This photo shows so clearly the street light in front of our house on the old dirt road where Jack, Kathleen, Herb and I used to play every night when the weather allowed. It would be the base for our games of Hide and Seek or Ditch or whatever. The neighbor children also joined us there, and it was from there that Mom would call us in one at a time, starting with the oldest to give us our sponge bath while standing on the old white stool in the kitchen. (Of course in later years Jack and Kathleen could bathe themselves). We would get so dirty from all the dust that floated up into the grass and weeds that we played and hid in.
Jack, my brother on the left, is in his Savanna High School Band uniform, he was born in 1917 so he must be about 16 years old here, which would place the photo as sometime in the early 1930s, in front of our home on Ridge Road.
