George Stone & Ica (Payne) Stone

George Stone was born in 1868 in Tennessee and died in 1942 in Elkhorn Grove Township, Carroll County, Illinois. He met and married Ica Dora Payne in 1895. She was born in 1879 in Tennessee and died at R and L Nursing Home in Forreston, Ogle County, Illinois in 1954. They met at Washington College, Jonesboro, Washington County, Tennessee where George was a student. The Payne family bequethed land to the college serving as Trustees as well as other different positions and the family made their home at the college.

George and Ica came to Carroll County in 1903 to 1904, making their home and farming in Elkhorn Grove Township where he had a large herd of cattle. George also worked at Thorp's Mill in Milledgeville until he could not work any longer. With 2 full-time jobs, George still kept a beautiful yard with lots of flowers and a huge vegetable garden, according to grandaughter Mary Locey Gilbert.

Their grandaughter, Mary Sue Locey Gilbert remembers, "Grandpa Stone" worked for Thorp's Mill in Millegville until he could not work any longer. He kept a beautiful yard with lots of flowers and a huge garden. Our family usually went to Gramma and Grandpa Stones for a 'big feed' every Christmas."
