JOHN W. BUCKWALTER - After serving in the Navy during WWII, John W. Buckwalter joined the
Army's Second Chemical Mortar Battalion {The Red Dragon} and served in
the Korean War from 1950 to 1951.
His MOS was 1543 Wire Repair Section Chief which left him with the unenviable position of stringing communication wire ahead of the troops, so that communication would be established once the Battalion arrived and keeping the radio equipment working during that first bitterly cold Korean Winter.
The Red Dragon
was the only chemical mortar battalion to serve in the Korean War, and
the last one to exist in the U.S. Army. He was discharged 23 June 1952
in Colorado Springs.
