
Alyn Miller, retired Shannon fire chief, has been selected to be the grand marshall of the Shannon Homecoming Labor Day parade. the parade will step off from Lions Park at 10am, Monday Sept. 5. Shannon homecoming this year will run from 6pm Saturday, Sept 3 until Monday Sept 5.
Miller retired this year after serving thirty years with the Shannon Fire Department of which he served as chief for the last two years. He was also a member of the ambulance crew for two years.
The grand marshall is selected each year by a committee of five consisting of the past and present presidents of the Lions Club, the past and present Commander of the American Legion Post and the president of the Village Board of Trustees. The grand marshall is selected on the basis of the input supplied to the community. Community service, volunteer help given to the young, old and needy and contribution in time and effort to the church , the school, the community and the organizations within the community are the criteria used by the person honored each year.
In addition to his service with the fire department, Miller was a member of the Lions Club for twenty years, the American Legion Post for forty-nine years and the Masons for twenty years. Miller is best known for his job as Santa Claus for the children at Christmas time, a position he has held for thirty five years.
Miller served his county as a member of the field artillery in the European theatre of action during WW2. He and his family are members of the Bethel United Methodist Church of Shannon. Miller has held many offices within the church including president of the Board of Trustees and President of the Administrative Board.
The community of Shannon is proud and thankful to honor a person of Miller's caliber. Miller is well known for his sense of humor and willingness to help and serve. He will reign over all 1988 Shannon Homecoming activities. A special program honoring Miller will be given by Village President John McPherson, Sunday evening Sept. 4, immediately following the Eastland High School band concert
