Funeral services were held at 2 'clock this afternoon at the home in Thomson and were in charge of the Rev. W.S. Fedwisch pastor of the Methodist church of Savanna. Hymns were sung by a quartette of Savanna friends Mrs. Garfield Watson, Mrs. Kathryn Ferguson, T.P. Madsen and R.G. Fuller. Bearers were Charles and J.H. Wilt, Orville Orcutt, Alfred St. Ores, C.K. Switzer and John Schade, neighbors here. Burial was in the family lot in the Savanna cemetery.
Amanda Elizabeth Geisinger, daughter of George L. and Emeline Geisinger, wsa born May 19, 1849 in Hagerstown MD, coming to this county with her parents when young. On June 15, 1871, she was married to Thaddeus W. Graves at Morrison IL. The couple lived in Thomson, where Mr. Graves was employed by the Milwaukee railroad until 1887, when they movd to Savanna and resided there until the death of Mr. Graves May 9, 1910. Shortly afterward Mrs. Graves went to Denver to live with a daughter, but six years ago she went to Thomson and took up her residence with her sister and two brothers, Sam and George Geisinger. Both brother have passed away within the past few years.
Mr. and Mrs. Graves were the parents of four children, Walter, Hattie, Ernest and Edith, the last two being twins and the only ones now surviving, the older two dying after reaching maturity. Ernest resides in Savanna and his sister Mrs. Edith Sheldon, lives in Denver. Mrs. Graves is also mourned by her sister, Miss Etta, and a brother, Charles of Lost Nation IA and two grandchildren. SHe has been identified with the Methodist church since early life being in turn a member of the Thomason, Savanna and Denver churches.
ERNEST GEORGE GRAVES
- Services for Ernest George Graves, 75, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Hunter's Fuller Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Thomas Jernigan, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating.
During the last rites Arnold Bernisen of Clinton, formerly of Savanna, sang "Sweet Peace the Gift of God's Love" and "I Would Be True", with Mrs. Raymond Phillips at the organ. Casket bearers were Albert M. Grsison, Elmer Airhart, Lowell Struckman, Spencer T. Nesbit, Vern H. Mann, and Albert A. Nicol. Burial was in Savanna Cemetery.
Mr. Graves died at 8 p.m. Monday (23 Apr 1956) in the Savanna City Hospital where he had been a patient for two weeks. His death followed several weeks of illness. He was born in Fulton, and spent most of his lifetime in Savanna. Ernie was a retired Milwaukee Railroad switch foreman. He was a member of the Savanna Township park Board from its start.
Surving are his twin sister, Mrs. Mark (Edith) Sheldon of Denver Colo; a niece, Mrs. Myra Sheldon Place of Denver; and a nephew Matthew SHeldon of Mitchell Neb.
HANNAH (LAMBERT) GRAVES
- Funeral services were held in the Fuller Funeral Home here Tuesday for Mrs. Sam Graves, 87, who died Saturday at midnight in the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Smythe. The Rev. Arthur C. Monkman officiated. Burial was in Savanna Cemetery. Mrs. Graves, the former Hannah E. Lambert, was born June 11, 1859 near Mount Carroll, the daughter of John and Mary (Watson) Lambert. Her husband, who died in 1943, and she had resided in Chestnut Park for many years. For the last nine months, Mrs. Graves lived in Chicago. Surviving are two sons, Ray of Mount Carroll and William of Clinton, Iowa, the daughter, Mrs. Smythe, and a sister, Mrs. Nora Crouse, Pearl City.
THADDEUS W. GRAVES
, old soldier and well known resident of this city passed away at his home on Chicago Avenue this (Thursday) morning at eight o'clock. While Mr. Graves had been in poor health for a number of years following the effects of a sunstroke his last sickness was of short duration and his death is a shock to the members of the family.
Monday morning about nine o'clock he was stricken with paralysis of the brain. Tuesday he appeared better and his condition more hopeful. Wednesday a change for the worse again took place and he failed rapidly until this morning when he responded to the last call.
Mr. Graves was born in Ohio, January 19, 1834. At the age of 17 years he came to IL locating in Morrison where he worked for a number of years. June 14, 1870 he was united in marriage to Miss Amanda Geisinger to whom were born four children, Hattie, Walter, (both deceased) Ernest and Edith, wife of Mark SHeldon of Denver.
Twenty-Three years ago in October Mr. Graves came to Savanna to reside and became one of our respected citizens who wsa well thought of by a large circle of friends. It was ever his aim to do right and he did his very best to follow this rule. .....(the rest is missing)..
