CHARLES HESS
, only son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Hess, died Saturday evening, of that dread disease, consumption, which had its incipiency in a severe cold contracted in the mountains of California five years ago. Although he tried numerous remedies, and removed to a lower altitude, the disease gained upon him with such rapidity that he turned his face towards home, arriving here on the evening of Decoration Day two years ago, resigned to die, if it must be, but hoping strongly that a change in climate and the loving ministrations of his own people would work a change for the better. But the disease had too firm a grasp upon him. Medical skill was powerless, and while at times he seemed to gain a little, it was only to slip back on succeeding days. For the past six months he has suffered intensely, growing weaker day by day, until the end came as above stated. Charlie was 24 years, 6 months and, 7 days old, a bright, loveable boy, who being a great reader and close observer, was exceptionally well posted for one of his years. He has borne his heavy afflictions patiently and uncomplainingly, and we hope and trust that at last all is well with him.
The funeral was held from the home Monday afternoon, Rev. Geo. Bollinger officiating, assisted by Rev. Dolliver, and the remains interred in the family lot in Lanark cemetery. The pall bearers were selected from among his old school mates, viz: Robert Hawk, Geo. Wiley, Fred Glotfelty, Bert Tarner, Ray Lichty and Royal Bray, with the following young ladies acting as honorary bearers: Mrs. Adda Glotfelty, Mrs. Jennie Messer, and the Misses Nora Byers. CHARLES P. HETH
, a farmer residing in this vicinity for many years, committed suicide last Wednesday afternoon by hanging himself in his barn. His home was about two miles southeast of Milledgeville. His wife died over a year ago and since then he was subject to spells of melancholy and brooding, oft times refusing to recognize his most intimate friends and acquaintances. He came to town frequently, but at times would recognize no one except those with whom he did business.
On Wednesday his son, Wilbur, was loading his household goods, preparing to move near Dixon. Mr. Heth came to town in the forenoon with H.T. Healey of Milledgeville. He returned home in the afternoon and passed several times from the house to the barn. He seemed to be unusually depressed and melancholy. About 4:20 p.m. his grandson, Henry Robinson, went to the barn for a rope and when he entered the building he saw his grandfather suspended froma beam at the end of a rope, his feet touching the ground. Henry quickly returned to the house and reported the discovery. Word was brought to town and the coroner, Dr. J.B. Schneiter of Savanna, notified. There being no train leaving for this place then the inquest was deferred until Thursday morning, when the coroner arrived and impanelled a jury. The body was brought to this place on Wednesday evening by H.H. Olmsted, the undertaker and W.S. Sweet and placed in the undertaking establishment.
Thursday morning the coroner selected the following jury to hold the inquest; A.J. Wood, H.E. Fike, R.W. Durstine, R.E. Dickey, J.Landis and C. Bittner. The following witnesses were sworn and testified; H.H. Olmsted, H.T. Healey, George Eastabrooks, James Fuller, Henry Robinson, Geo. Robinson. The testimony was in accordance with the above given facts.
The jury rendered the following verdict;
Charles Heth was born in Erie Co., PA, July 1836, and was therefore in the 65th year of age at the time of his death. When nine years of age he moved to Ohio and soon after came to Illinois, locating in Rock Creek Twp. Carroll County. For the last 25 years he has been a resident of Wysox township. NELLIE (CONAWAY) HORLACHER
- Mrs. Frank Horlacher was born September 12, 1873, and died June 18, 1898. When Mrs. Horlacher was 18 months old her mother died. She was given in the hands of her stepmother's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Murray when she was 1 1/2 years old and remained with them until she was about 12. Her father, harvey Conaway moved to Coleta when she was at that age. Her stepmother having died also, Nellie, as she was known by her Coleta friends, managed the household for her father, acting as a mother to her two little half sisters, Myrtle and Iva and half brother John. Her brother died a few years ago. She remained with her father and sisters until her sisters were old enough to manage affairs, when she was united in marriage with Frank Horlacher, at Morrison Feb. 25, 1897.
About 8 weeks ago she began to feel ill and from that time grew gradually worse until her death. Her ailment was an abscess in the throat. The funeral was from the Liberal U.B. church, Monday June 20 at 11 a.m., Rev. W.T. Richardson officiating. The remains interred in the cemetery near Malvern beside those of her mother.
Hers was a sweet, simple pure life. Her disposition won her hosts of friends. At her funeral which was perhaps the largest ever held at this place, there was hardly a dry eye. She was a devout Christian and belonged to the U.B. church. Such a person certainly deserves the reward of a life in the great beyond. All sympathies with her two sisters and father in their bereavement.

MORRIS EDWARD HORNER
, was born December 9, 1869 one mile south of Lanark. He completed his earthly journey August 18, 1923 at the age of 53 years, 8 months, and 9 days. He was the son of Benjamin Horner who is now living in Sawtelle, California. His mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Morris Horner, died in 1896. His only sister was laid to rest in 1915. (Note: This date is incorrect; his sister, Emma Horner Stoner, died October 9, 1916.) His only brother, Harry Horner, lives near Shannon, Illinois.
In the spring of 1870, he moved to Kansas (Note: Abilene, Kansas.) with his parents where he lived until his death. (Note: This is incorrect; he returned to Lanark, Illinois in 1893 after attending the World’s Fair of 1893.) He finished the public schools of Kansas and spent two years in the Dickinson County High School in Chapman, Kansas. On December 23, 1897 he was married to Mary Hanse by Z. T. Livengood of Lanark, Illinois. From that day until the late separation he was a devoted husband and loving father and their home was congenial and hospitable. To this home were born two children, one daughter Etta E. Horner and one son, H. Reid Horner both of whom are home with their mother.
Brother Horner accepted Christ as his Lord and Master and became a member of the Church of the Brethren in early life and lived a blameless and consistent Christian life from that time on, to the best of his conscience and highest judgment. He had the highest respect for the Christian religion and a profound love for his Master and strove to follow him every step of the way. He was loyal to his church and to the ideals and purposes for which she stood. To be out of tune with that for which his church stood and with that which his God willed for his life was far beneath his wish and purpose. He was not one who stood out conspicuously as a leader in the church but was one of those silent dependable forces, upon which so much depends, which work for righteousness and justice throughout the community and the world. His religion was not one of words or ceremony, but one of intense everyday living; a religion of everyday life within the community. He was an untiring witness for his Master in that he carried the principles of the Christian religion over into his everyday relationships and dealings with his fellowmen.
He was a noble son of creation, a statesmanlike citizen, ready always to do his part in making the state what it should be; a neighbor beyond reproach, thinking always of the well being of others; a Christian with an intense desire that all men should know the beauties of the Christian life. He was a father who loved and cherished his family, a husband who dignified the sacredness of marriage and a true companion; devoted to his companion and dedicated to the highest and best for all.
The funeral was held last Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at the Lanark Church of the Brethren, Rev. Forney conducted the service, assisted by Rev. Eckerle. Internment in Lanark Cemetery.

ELIZABETH (BARBER) HOSTETTER
- Mrs. Hostetter was born in Canton, New York, August 20, 1852, the daughter of Luman Foote Barber and Angeline Bradley Barber. Her girlhood was spent in Canton, and she was graduated from St. Lawrence University in 1871. She came to Mount Carroll to teach and study music in 1875, and was graduated from the Mount Carroll Seminary Music Conservatory in 1878.
On June 27, 1878 she married William Ross Hostetter. Their three children were Abram, Angeline Beth, and Ross Barber. For forty years she and her husband lived at Grouseland Farm, in Salem Township, near Mount Carroll. To those whose privilege it was to enjoy the warm hospitality at Grouseland, the memory will always be of a real home, wholesome and gracious. Mrs. Hostetter was always keenly and vitally interested in Frances Shimer, and for thirty-five years served on its board of trustees. Her interests were varied, her intellect keen. She was a chartger member of the Women’s Club, attended its meetings with great regularity, and took an active part in its programs until the past few years. She was a member of the D. A. R. through her forebears, Reuben Barber, of Connecticut, and Lt. George Sloan, of Massachusetts, a Minute Man.
She leaves one daughter, one son, three granddaughters and two grandsons, and one great granddaughter.
Mrs. Hostetter always was a woman of great loyalty to any cause or movement in which she believed. She always kept, despite her many years here, a certain New England conservatism and reserve in her approach to people or to causes. But once convinced of their merit, her loyalty was great. Through the Canton paper, “The Plain Dealer”, she kept in touch with her college and her old home town activities and interests. Thus, though seventy years of her life were spent in the middle west, part of her heart was in New England.
Her interest in books, art, and her family was keen. Her devotion to her family was complete. She was a woman sympathetic, kindly, cultured, and of great strength of character. In the death of Mrs. Hostetter, on September 15, 1945, Frances Shimer and the community has lost one of its finest and most beloved citize
