Shimer College, in Mt. Carroll, has been in use since 1853. The school was founded by Francis Wood Shimer. In 1906 a fire destroyed all the old buildings. It was rebuilt in 1907. For a period between the Civil and the 1940's the College was for Women only. The education received here would be a "cut above" the norm. An unusual school that would only appeal to the "intelligent" and serious student. Financial troubles forced the college to move to Waukegan IL. At an Auction in 1970 the Mount Carroll campus was purchased by the Campbell Center. It was placed on the National Register in 1980.
