Carroll County was organized on 22 February 1839. The County is named for Charles Carroll who was one of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence. We have 14 Townships which I hope to get some History on soon.

The historical town of Savanna is here in Carroll County right on the Mississippi River. When the trains and riverboats rules this town was a hustle and bustle of excitement and adventure. People from far and wide passed through Savanna, some moved on but many left their mark. Further inland is the county seat of Mt. Carroll, complete with a Courthouse Square. The city of Mt. Carroll, although up to date and progressive, is still a place where time stands still.

The brick streets can still be found, the old buildings and stores are still used. A drive thorugh town makes you feel like you would want to live there. There are other towns and areas of interests that we will explore and learn about together.

In each family there is one who seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the family story, and to feel that somehow they know and approve. It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I, and why do I do the things I do? It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying, "I can't let this happen." It goes to deep pride that they fought to make, and keep, us a Nation. It goes to a realization that they were doing it for us.
