Elizabeth Zachary
From the Martinsville Planet - February
- 1923
Elizabeth, daughter of Delila and Wootson Howell was born at London,
Kentucky, January 29, 1844, and died at Martinsville, Illinois February 16, 1923, aged 79 years and 17 days.
At the age of seventeen she was married to Ben Owens and together they
migrated to Bedford, Indiana where seven children were born to them. They remained in this location until the family
was raised and her husband answered the death summons. Four children of this family remain to mourn their Mother's
departure, Sarah Cotton and Will Owen of Decatur, Illinois; Elizah Flowers, Kansas, Illinois, and Hattie Vaughn
who dwells south of Martinsville.
In the spring of 18811 she was married to William Zachary and they took up their location at Tower Hill,
Illinois. One son, Ad Zachary, was born to this union. After changing locations several times they made their final
residence in Clark County since 1892.
More than ordinary peace and inspiration when, nearly a year ago she
consecrated her soul to God during the meeting at the Church of God. Her radiant countenance during her baptism,
her desire for the church which she joined and her delight in singing and hearing sung the devotional hymns of
grace, will always be an inspiration to the memories of those who were acquainted with her. She regarded death
as one goes home to a loving Father.
There are left to mourn her going besides the children above named, her
sorrowing husband, one brother, A. M. Howell of Kinmundy, Illinois, one sister, Fanny Chestnut, Indiana; nineteen
grand children and twenty seven great grand children; besides neighbors and friends.

services will be held from the home Friday morning at 10 o'clock. Interment in Baird Cemetery. Chester Snavely,
Funeral Director.
* * * We desire to thank our many friends and neighbors for their kindness through
the sickness and death of our dear wife and mother. Also the beautiful flowers.

WILLIAM ZACHARY DIES IN BLAZE WHICH DESTROYS HIS HOME
William Zachary, 85 years of age, died in the fire which destroyed the
room in which he lived at the home of his son, Ad Zachary, in the south part of Martinsville, about 1:30 o'clock
Wednesday morning of last week. When discovered the blaze had enveloped the entire room and the roof was ready
to fell in, thus barring any chance of rescuing the aged man. The fire department made a run, put out the blaze,
and removed the body.
Due to the condition of the body, the funeral services were held that
afternoon at three o'clock, at the Johnson Funeral Home. Rev. A. C. Smith was in charge, and burial followed in
Baird cemetery, south of Martinsville.
1Note: His wife's obit gives the year
of their marriage as 1881.
