I have many ancestors that lived in Coles County and the subject line above contains some of my surnames. I have recently been researching another line and think I may be close to finding more connections to my family history puzzle.
I am seeking additional information on these families:
James COX and Mary Matilda ASHMORE,
George SMITH and Sarah COX,
Solomon BRANDENBURG and Mrs. Sarah "Sally" SMITH.
If you are familar with any of these lines please contact me so we can exchange information.

In response to message #1
I have information on solomon brandengurg. "keith mumaw"

In response to message #2
I would really appreciate it if you would consider sharing your information.
I already knew the BRANDENBURGS had a close association with my family in this area but I thought they were just close friends until I learned that Solomon married Mrs. Sarah "Sally" (nee: COX)SMITH. I am fairly sure she is a member of my COX family. I know that she and Solomon were grandparents to my grand aunt's husband. I found them on the 1850 US Federal census Coles County and the children living in that household I believe are from Sarah's 1st marriage. The 2 year old Jane, I believe is my 2nd grt grandmother, Sarah Jane SMITH. On the census image it looked like Mrs. SMITH was quite a bit older than Solomon. I could not find Solomon household in 1860.
I am very excited to have learned something new about my family and I would appreciate any information you could share with me. Please e-mail me directly at
Regards, Peggy

It couldn't hurt to compare. Although I have not come across any ESSEX in my own research so far. My COX line goes back to Anthony and Mary (GILBERT) COX. They came from KY to IL about 1820. Let me know if you think your COX connects to this line or a different COX line.

George SMITH and Sarah COX (daughter of James & Mary above),

I had alot of family in Coles Co. and I have Solomon Brandeburg in my family tree also. My Solomon born april, 12, 1794 in Mason Co., Kentucky. Married Allizan Williams Jan 9, 1798 in Harrison Co., Indiana. They had a son named Solomon. The elder Solomon's parents are Henry Brandenburg and Sarah Henrietta Preston. Henrys parents are Mathias Brandenburg and Hester Wolgamot (Vulgamore, Vulgarmette). Go to Rootsweb to the family trees. Type in Solomon Brandenburg. Look at # 1562646 and they have the whole family tree for the Brandenburg branch. It goes back to Royalty. Happy Hunting:) Becca Gilliland-Porter

1. "LYNCH and WILSON families, Coles County, IL"
In about 1901, Arthur LYNCH (b. Feb 1871) married Rachel WILSON (b. Nov 1881) in Charleston, Coles, IL. Their marriage date is estimated based on the fact that they had not yet married as of the June 1900 census, and had their first child, Lee, was born in 1902.

Their known children were: (all born in Charleston, Coles, IL)

C. Lee LYNCH, b. 1902
James C. LYNCH, b. 1903
Gohring Arthur LYNCH, b.
Margaret LYNCH, b. 1905
Robert LYNCH, b. 1909

Arthur LYNCH was the editor of the Charleston Courier for many years.

Rachel WILSON b. Nov 1881 was probably the daughter of either Charles WILSON b. 1860 Ohio or William WILSON b. 1861 Ohio. They in turn were sons of Jane B. “Jennie” [TROUT] [WILSON] COURTNEY and her first marriage to William I. WILSON in about 1854. This is based on Lee LYNCH, James LYNCH, and Gohring LYNCH all being listed as great grandsons in Jane B. “Jennie” [TROUT] [WILSON] COURTNEY’s obituary following her death on Valentines Day, 14 Feb 1925, near Charleston, Coles, IL. She was the widow of Joseph B. COURTNEY.

My question: Can anyone confirm the parents of Rachel WILSON as being either Charles or William WILSON? Does anyone have any more information on either Charles or William, sons of Jane B. TROUT and William I. WILSON?

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

I am wondering what his connection may have been, if any, to NEWMAN, ILLINOIS which is in present day DOUGLAS COUNTY. There is also a NEWMAN CEMETERY.
Is there anything written about WHOM the community of “NEWMAN” was named after?
Is there any information on the Newman Family in the COLES COUNTY LIBRARY?
Thank you, John Mays, Perrysburg, Ohio

John, there is limited information on Wade Hampton Newman. Birth and death dates, spouse, and mother and father. His wife has a tombstone but was unable to find one for Wade. As far as Newman, Illinois goes, I don't know who it was named after but it was back when Illinois became a state. By the way, Wade and his wife are buried in Mt. Tabor Cemetery if you didn't already know that.

My gr-gr-grandparents were Lewis and Eliza Rice Ashworth. This picture shows them in a horse and carriage in front of their home at 2521 Prairie Avenue, Mattoon Illinois. Does anyone know if this house is still standing. I was wondering if any Ashworths still live in the area? I remember coming to a family reunion with my grandmother in Mattoon. I was probably 5 or 6. 2. "Re: Ashworth Family"
In response to message #1
Dear Vivian,
My husband and I have just returned from the 68th Ashworth - Rice
family reunion in Mattoon, IL. It is held every year on the 2nd Sunday of August at the Peterson Park Pavilion. This is the first time I've attended (because of work), but my husband has attended several with his mother, Mildred Ashworth Cox (now deceased). She was the daughter of Charles Clinton Ashworth and the granddaughter of Lewis and Eliza. Thank you for picture. I will be glad to exchange information with you.
We have formal pictures of your grandmother and grandfather. There are still lots of Ashworths in Mattoon. We stayed with my husband's uncle, Charles Clinton Ashworth in his old remodeled farmhouse. My husband's name is Charles after his grandfather and uncle. His uncle is called Junior Ashworth by all his family and friends. He will be 80 in October and is a very young 80. Another uncle is Jimmy Ashworth who is 78 and also lives in Mattoon. We had a wonderful time with them. There were 70 plus at the reunion and that is the usual attendance.

I don't know about the house in the picture but can find out from the uncles. We took pictures of the gravestones of all the ancestors while there and haven't even developed them yet. Where do you live? We live in Wichita, KS. It was a 12 hour drive,
but worth it. Some of the corn was over 10 feet high. The country was just beautiful.

I talked to Uncle Junior this morning and he tells me the house on Prairie Ave. in Mattoon is still standing! He said he was last in it in about 1933 and it seemed old then. He says it looks the same as it always did to him. He doesn't know if the Ashworths built it or not. He wonders if you are the daughter of Charlie Brown who lived at Collinsville? He says Katherine Brown visited them in Mattoon several times but is now deceased. He would like more details as to when she died, etc. He lost his wife (Patty)of 60+ years just this past May 30.
Please contact me at as I do not check this site every day. Linda Cox

I dont anything about your Pine family in Coles County, but i wanted to let you know that there are Pine family in Warren County, Illinois.

There is an
Joseph b: 1828-He married into my line.
Andrew b:oct 16, 1821 in England
Charles b: September 24, 1831 in England
that could possibly be the father of your John.(More likely Andrew)
There are also sisters Sophia, Louiza, Sarah, and Mary.Their parents are Robert Pine and Elizabeth Morris.

1. "Bryant Family"
I am looking for information on John Bryant and Roberta May Fuller Bryant. They both grew up around Mattoon, Il., married and had 4 children, one being my Father - Dennis L Bryant. Also, My Grandfather John Bryant married FreeLove Fuller (yes, my Grandmother's sister) first, with whom he had 9 children. My Grandmother Roberta raised those 9 children and then they had 4 of their own. They lived at 609 Moultrie in Mattoon all my life. I am researching my family lineage. Any information would be helpful. Thank You. "M Bryant"

If someone lived around the Diona area in Coles County in the mid 1860's to mid 1890's, what cemetery would they have been buried in?
Was there a cemetery in and around Diona?
I understand Diona was a larger place than it is today. Was there a church there and if so what domination? Any help will be appreciated. "molly"
