Patrick John Shipbaugh Killed
The injured man, Daniel Harrison, 24, of 3941 N. Richmond St., was listed in fair condition in Northwestern Memorial Hospital with numerous lacerations of the face and arms and possible facial fractures. Belmont Area homicide investigator Hans Heitmann said Harrison told him the steel cable supporting the west end of the scaffolding slipped from its roof fastening. The strain on the remaining cable apparently caused it to snap, Heitmann said. An emergency room doctor said it was amazing that Harrison wasn't more seriously injured or killed. He said Harrison probably had "ridden the scaffold" all or most of the way down, somewhat reducing the effect of the fall. The man who died apparently had fallen off the scaffold immediately, the doctor said. Robert Weiner, owner of the building, said there had been trouble with the scaffolding on Friday, but that the men returned to work Monday. The men were employed by Anchor Building Maintenance Co., Inc., 3901 W. Irving Park Rd.
