William H. Caughey was born on March 31, 1824, in Washington County, Pennsylvania. His parents are unknown, being of Irish descent. He died on December 1, 1897, from pneumonia in Robinson, Illinois, and was buried in the Old Robinson Cemetery. On Dec. 8, 1897 - Josiah Caughey, aged 82 years, 918 East Pierce St, Council Bluffs, Iowa declared "I have known William Caughey and his wife Eliza A. since before they were married. I know they were married very young. I know neither of them were ever married before they were married together. Neither of them were ever divorced from each other. My means of knowing is derived from long and intimate acquaintance of these parties as William Caughey was my brother."

William married Eliza Ann Caughey (his cousin) on November 9, 1843, in Columbiana County, Ohio. She was born June 9, 1825, in Jackson County, Ohio. She died on October 10, 1911, and was buried in the Old Robinson Cemetery. Her obituary (Robinson Constitution) reads “After a short illness, the result of a severe fall which she received a few days before, Mrs. Eliza Ann Caughey died Sunday, October 10th, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Young. The funeral services were conducted Thursday morning at the Young home, near Flat Rock, Andy W. Duncan officiated, and burial was made in the Robinson Cemetery. Thirty-nine grandchildren, thirty-eight great grandchildren, and nine children survive her. William was enrolled as corporal in the Civil War on August 21, 1862, at Jackson County, Ohio, in Co. “A”, 117th Regiment of Ohio Volunteers and served until April 20, 1863. He also served as a Corporal in Co. “K”, 91st Regiment of Ohio Volunteers from September 3, 1963, until June 24, 1865. He was 5 foot 8 ½ inches with fair complexion, gray eyes and dark hair. After the Civil War, he lived in Jackson, Ohio, and moved to Illinois in 1870. He also lived in Washington County, Pennsylvania, before 1870. He also lived in Washington County, Pennsylvania, before 1854 after his marriage. The 1870 Illinois Census of Honey Creek Township of Crawford County showed the following: William Caughey (46—Carpenter--$500 Property Value), Eliza (45), Elizabeth (22), James (21), Albert (19), Mary (16), Jane (14) and Samuel (11).

The obituary in the “Robinson Argus” (December 9, 1897) was listed as follows: “The Last Roll Call—It counted Wednesday evening of last week at 4:15, for Comrade Wm. Caughey, who was a soldier of two regiments during the late war for the Union—and having two honorable discharges. The deceased was…73 years, 5 months, and 6 days old when he died. He had been falling, unable to do any work for about ten years before his death, and for the past two or three years was unable to be about, his enfeebled condition being the result of hardship and exposure during the army service. Religiously, Mr. Caughey was originally a Presbyterian, belonging to what was known as the ‘Seceders.’ Then when this branch united with another he became a member of the United Presbyterian, and was at one time an elder. Having no church of his choice in Robinson he affiliated with the Christian Church here, and was for some time a teacher in the Sunday School. The funeral took place Friday at 10:00 a.m. from his residence, services being conducted by Elder W. C. Swartz, after which the remains were followed to the cemetery by a number of old comrades and friends, and there laid away to rest.”
