Joseph Knight who was tried and convicted of murder in Paris, Oct 1850 for the murder of his brother John.  The shooting is supposed to have occurred Jan. 5, 1850 in Douglas County (the part of Coles). The jury ruled that Joseph should receive the death sentence. The sentence was not however carried out because Judge David Davis of the 8th Circuit Court did not approve of  death penalty. Finally, Judge Davis contacted Governor August French and Knight's sentence was  commuted to life imprisonment. He was brought by the Edgar County Sheriff to the Illinois State Prison in Alton on Nov. 3, 1850. Upon arrival at the prison he claimed to have been 45 years old and had a wife in Clark County. He was subsequently pardoned and was discharged on May 22, 1856

It has been claimed that Joseph was the son of John C. Knight and Hannah Hutchinson, born 1819 in Ohio.

A Joseph Knight was being held for manslaughter in the Clark County Jail at Marshall and is recorded in the 1850 census.  A John Knight's death is recorded in the Clark County mortality list that year as being shot to death in Jan.  He was 55 and born in TN. believe these to have been a sons of James Knight and Margaret Prigmore.  Joseph at the time was married to Nancy Jane Dozier of Clark County. Joseph was born 1804 in Edgar County.  I believe Nancy later married Levi Beauchamp. Two of their daughters, Nancy and Rhoda could possibly have been Joseph's.

Were these two Josephs the same? I am looking for any additional information about
