General County Information

Effingham County - was cut off from Fayette County and separately organized in 1831.
Named for Gen. Edward Effingham. It is situated in the central portion of the State, 62 miles northeast of St.
Louis; has an area of 490 square miles and a population in 1900 of 20,465.
T.M. Short, I. Fanchon and William I. Hawkins were the first County commissioners. Effingham, the county-seat,
was platted by Messrs. Alexander and Little in 1854. Messrs. Gillenwater, Hawkins and Brown were among the earliest
settlers. Several lines of railway cross the county. Agriculture and sheep-raising are leading industries, wool
being one of the principal products. "Historical Encyclopedia
of Illinois, 1901"
Two theories exist as to how Effingham got its name. In the first, the community was named for an investor in the
Illinois Central railroad. The second has the town named in honor of Lord Effingham, a British noble, who resigned
his military commission rather than fight against the colonies during the Revolutionary War.
Today Effingham is called the “Crossroads to Opportunity” due to the close proximity of I-57, I-70, and US Route
40 (From the National Road Association
of Illinois)

The interns who work there are usually pretty quick in responding.
