FORD COUNTY CEMETERY RECORDS
Mount Olivet Christian Church Cemetery
[aka Brick Church Cemetery]
Button Township
(burials prior to 1964)
This was a hand-typed, hand-bound book which did not bear a copyright date, but was probably compiled by the Governor
Thomas E. Ford Chapter of the DAR c. 1963. Many thanks to Gail Hahn Hutchcraft [ladybug@arends-sons.com]
for finding and transcribing this document for the benefit and free use of all Ford County, Illinois researchers.
The names in the book were presented in "close-to" alphabetical order, meaning they were placed within
the proper letter group. I've gone a step further and alphabetized the whole list. There are 149 burials listed
here.
The Mount Olivet Christian Church Cemetery is located in the south central part of Ford County, Section 31 of Button
Twp. The church was often called the "Brick Church" because of its brick construction.
In the Ford County History by Merton Dunlap, published in 1884, a map of Button Twp, on page 21, gives the location
quite accurately. If one is attempting to drive there, the easiest route is east of Paxton, Il on Rt 9 to Clarence,
Il., then south three miles, west one and one-half miles, and again south a quarter of a mile.
At this date, 1961, the church is still standing and is being used by another denomination. The cemetery, fairly
well-kept, is located at the north and west of the church, but adjoining it.
The history of this cemetery is reflected in the history of the church, as is also true of the old Pleasant Grove
Church, and many of the members of the church are buried in this cemetery. William Walker gave the land for this
church and cemetery as well as for the Pleasant Grove Church. He came to Ford County from Wayne County, Indiana,
in 1859, and acquired considerable land in this area.
The land which was given was a portion of his farm.
The first services of this church were held in the Strayer School, which was built in 1857. However, the members
felt the need for a church building, and on December 10, 1871, the church was dedicated. Some of the members were:
Marston Dudley, Milton Strayer, John M. Strayer, T.B. Strayer, William Walker, David Morehouse, W.H.H. Wood, J.A.
Dudley, Henry Correll, John Correll, Joseph Harris, John B. Harris, Daniel Allhands, and their wives; also Sarah
Button, Elizabeth Strayer, N.B. Spiceard, H.S. Strayer, Mary E. Spiceard, F.L. Holloway, M.E. Dudley, S.J. Strayer,
Dora Strayer, Mary Strayer, Sarah G. Walker, Oswell M. Walker, and Mrs. Clotfeller.
Although the church was not dedicated until 1871, yet the cemetery was used before that, as there are records indicating
burials were made here as early as 1866. This cemetery is still being used for burials, and is in good condition.
