GALLOWAY, MODELIA M. (MONTGOMERY)
"Modelis (sic) M. MONTGOMERY, daughter of Thomas J. and Amenda (sic)
BROWN MONTGOMERY was born Mar. 30, 1879 near Sesser, Illinois and
departed this life August 20, 1945. Her age at death being 66yrs.
4mos. and 21 days. She has been in failing health for many years
but bore her suffering with much patience. On March 1, 1900 she
was united in marriage to Euphrates GALLOWAY who survives. She
leaves to mourn their loss 4 sons and 2 daughters, Harry, Gilbert,
and Stanton, all of near Sesser, and Ralph who is serving his country
now stationed in the Philippines, Arlie having preceded her in death.
The daughters are Grace STOCKTON of near Sesser, and Syble BOLEN of
Springfield, ILL. She leaves one brother, W. H. MONTGOMERY of Copeland,
Arkansas, 21 grandchild, 2 great grandchildren and a host of other
relatives and friends. Three sisters and four brothers have preceded
her in death.
Early in life she was converted and joined the Bear Point Free Will
Baptist Church. In later years she assisted in organizing a church
in the Hazel Dell community and was a charter member of Hazel Dell
Church of which she was a loyal and faithful member until the end.
She was a loyal and faithful companion and a loving mother and good
neighbor. It can truthfully be said that this community has been
made better by her living in its borders."
GAMBILL, LOY
Loy Gambill Is Killed by Mine Conveyor
Loy Gambill, 44, welder at Old Ben Mine No. 9 was killed about 8 o'clock
Sunday morning when he was dragged into a tipple conveyor on which he was
welding. Death was instantaneous.
Gambill, a former resident of this city, had lived in Johnston City since
1939. He resided at 1406 East Jefferson Street in Johnston City. He had
been an employee of the Old Ben Corporation the past three years.
Officials at the mind said Gambill was working with another welder at the
time of the accident. Gambill was welding flights when for some cause
officials said a switch was turned on, dragging him into the sprockets of
the conveyor. His body was badly mangled.
Surviving are his wife, a sister, Mrs. John Hughes of West Frankfort, and
his parents Mrs. and Mrs. James A. Gambill, also of West Frankfort.
The body is lying in state at the Union funeral home here. The casket will
not be opened. Funeral services will be held from the First Baptist church
in Johnston City Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. Rev. Homer Young,
pastor of the Methodist church in Johnston City, will officiate, assisted
by Rev. T.H. King, pastor of the First Baptist church of West Frankfort.

GIBBS, NAOMI
GIBBS, Naomi, 82, Macedonia, died at 2:40 a.m. Feb. 14, 1958 at the
McLeansboro nursing home after an illness of three months. Born Oct.
15, 1875 she was the daughter of Tilman and Eilen WILKEY SHIRLEY. She
was married to Willie (William L., Oct. 14, 1870-July 14, 1942) GIBBS,
May 10, 1890. He preceded her in death. Surviving are two daughters,
Mrs. Flora LONG, Mt. Pulaski, and Mrs. Maggie SULLIVAN, Maywood, three
half-sisters, Golda, Violet and Mary, six grandchildren, nine great
grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren. Services at Oak Hill
Church, Rev. Glen FISHER officiating. Interment in Oak Hill Cemetery.
GIFFORD, DELLA
Mrs. Della Gifford, 76, of Bethalto, died at 2:30 p.m. yesterday at
Alton Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Gifford was born in Franklin couny (sic) on Dec. 3, 1895, the
daughter of C.F. and Mary Jane (Barnfield) Warren.
She was married to Amos Gifford, in Benton, on Dec. 4, 1915.
She was a member of the Webb Prairie Baptist church.
Funeral services will be held Monday at Myers Chapel at 3 p.m., with the
Rev. C.J. Ketterman officiating. Burial will be in Liberty cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral chapel after 5 p.m. Sunday.
Mrs. Gifford is survived by her husband, Amos; one daughter, Mrs. Arla
Powers, Bethalto; a sister, Mrs. Birdie Odle, Mt. Vernon; two grandchildren
and three great-grandchildren.
GIFFORD, MARY D.
MARY D. GIFFORD DIES AT AGE 73
Mary Delia Gifford, a lifelong resident of Moore's Prairie township,
died at her home yesterday at 8:20 p.m. She was 73 years, four months, and
15 days of age at the time of her death.
Her husband, the late William J. Gifford, died July 29, 1944.
Mrs. Gifford was a member of the Frisco Baptist church, where funeral
services will be held Wdenesday (sic) at 1 p.m. The Rev. Bird Green will
conduct the services and burial will be in the Thurmond cemetery in Ewing
township, Franklin county. The body will lie in state at the family home.
Mrs. Gifford was born Dec. 3, 1872 in Ewing, the daughter of W.H. and
Millie (Harris) Newton.
She is survived by two sons, Amos Gifford, R.F.D. 3, Mt. Vernon, and
Earl Gifford, of Belle Rive; one daughter, Mrs. Grace Birkhead, of Belle
Rive; two brothers, Mart Newton, Mt. Vernon, and Ed Newton, Harrisburg,
Ill.; two half-brothers, Alva Newton, Clovis, N.M., and Ray Newton, Mt.
Vernon; three half-sisters, Mrs. Elsie Taylor, Ewing, Mrs. Nellie Rea, Mt.
Vernon, and Mrs. Olive Camphill, Mt. Vernon.
Seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive.

RITES HELD TODAY FOR WM. J. GIFFORD
Funeral services for William Judson Gifford, who died at 4:45 p.m.
Saturday at his home in the Frisco neighborhoon in Moores Prairie township,
were held at 2 p.m. today at the Frisco Baptist church.
The Rev. Bird Green conducted the service and interment took place at
Thurmon cemetery in Franklin county.
Mr. Gifford was born March 11, 1870 in Jefferson county, the son of
William H. and Permelia (Neal) Gifford. He was a farmer by trade and a
member of the Frisco Baptist church.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Delia Newton Gifford, two sons, Amos
Gifford of Mt. Vernon, Earl Gifford of Ina, a daughter, Mrs. Grace Birkhead
of Belle Rive; four sisters, Mrs. Amanda Davis of Lead, S.D., Mrs. Mary
Weeks, Mrs. Anna Slamon of Ewing, Mrs. Emma Lovin of Bluford, seven
grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
The body remained at the family home until the funeral hour.

Dwight Gilbreath, 78, of 10697 Lincoln Road, died at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 29,
1999 at Barnes Hospital, St. Louis, Mo. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday,
Dec. 3, 1999 at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home, Benton. Burial, with military rites
by the Benton American Legion and V.F.W. Posts, will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows
Cemetery, Benton. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mr. Gilbreath was born Aug. 28, 1921, in Rend City, the son of Lawrence and Zella
Wayman) Gilbreath. He married Annalea Odum on May 4, 1940 and she survives. Mr.
Gilbreath was a retired coal miner, having last worked at Old Ben #14. He was an
Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Rend City Baptist Church, the
U.M.W.A. Local 1545 and a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Survivors include his wife,
Annalea Gilbreath, Benton; one son, Dwight and wife Rhonda Gilbreath, Benton; two
daughters, Marilyn and husband Bill Mitchell, West Frankfort, Carolyn and husband
Jim Lambert, Benton; seven grandchildren, Darlina Mercado, Deanna Heal, Chris Milda,
Sarah Mitchell, Brian and Bob Lambert, and Shawn Gilbreath; four great-grandchildren,
Seth Russell, Josh and Jennifer Lambert, and Michelle Mercado; one brother, William
"Bill" Gilbreath, Benton; four sisters, Maxine Wilkerson, Benton, Jean Furlow,
Christopher, Betty Whitlow, Valier, Shirley Kent, Mendota; several nieces and
nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother, Kenneth Gilbreath;

Lillie ALLEN GASS, daughter of the late Eld. Calvin and
Margaret SCRIBNER ALLEN, died at her home in Ewing, Illinois 12 Sept. 1938.
She was born in Hamilton County near McLeansboro, Illinois in 1857. She was
married to Mr. GUILL, who lived but a short time, some years later she
married George GASS of Macedonia, Illinois, who preceded her in death. She
leaves her two brothers, John L. ALLEN of Ewing, and C.C. ALLEN of St.
Petersburg, Florida; one sister, Mrs. Bell BUZBEE of Hurst, Illinois and

BENTON WOMAN DIES IN MT.VERNON
Mrs. Charity E. GIBBS, 62,of 416 E. Main St., Benton, died
at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday in Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt.
Vernon. She was ill for a year.
A lifelong resident of Franklin County, Mrs. GIBBS was the
daughter of the late Casey and Resetta ABBOTT HUNGATE. She
married the late Harry GIBBS.
She leaves two children Mrs. Edna ANDREWS of Chicago and
Edward "Buck" OVERTURF of Mt. Vernon; brother Paul HUNGATE
of Moweaqua; sisters Mrs. Arizona BOWLING, Mrs. Martha

GIBBS, Ethel Carlton, 98, Newbern, TN, died at 4:35 a.m. Nov. 27, 1987
in Methodist Hospital in Dyersbury, TN. Mrs. Gibbs was born Nov. 24,
1889 in Macedonia, a daughter of John CARLTON. She married Everett E.
Gibbs, who preceded her in death. She is survived by a son, Wendell
GIBBS of Newbern, TN; a granddaughter, Mrs. Eddie (Judith Linn) GREGORY
of Newbern; two great granddaughters, Amy Linn and Wendy Michelle
GREGORY, both of Newbern; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. GIBBS
was a member of Corinth Methodist Church in Hamilton County. In
addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two

Clarence Ray "Curney" Glenn, 76, died at 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 29 with the Rev. Randy Hayes officiating. Burial will
be in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens. Those attending the graveside services are asked to go directly to the
cemetery on Friday morning. Visitation will be held at the Hughey Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on
Thursday. Mr. Glenn was born Nov. 18, 1922, in Jefferson County, the son of Orville and Doll Bain Glenn. They
preceded him in death. He married Helen B. Jones in 1941 and she survives. Mr. Glenn was employed for several
years at the Ford Motor Company in Chicago Heights and later, until retirement, was employed at Turco
Manufacturing Company in DuQuoin as a machine repairman. He was a member of the Westside Baptist Church,
Mt. Vernon Masonic Lodge No. 31 AF & AM, American Legion Post No. 141 in Mt. Vernon and was a post
commander and was a lifetime member of the Rend Lake Lunker Busters. He is survived by his wife Helen,
Mt. Vernon; daughters, Linda Karch and husband the Rev. Gary Karch, Mt. Vernon, Mickey Burwell and husband
Jerry, Mt. Vernon; sons, Larry R. Glenn, Mt. Vernon, Mike Glenn and wife Donna, Mt. Vernon, Mark Glenn and
wife Vicki, Valier; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Toddy Carlson, Salen and Cornelia Glenn,
Springfield and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson,

James Albert Glover, 85, of Benton died at 9:30 p.m.
Thursday, June 19, 2008, at the Severin Intermediate Care
Home in Benton.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at
the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home in Benton. Funeral services
will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with Pastor
Bert Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic
and Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton.

Mr. Glover was born Feb. 1, 1923, in Benton, the son of
Dick Glover and Aura Irene (Rushing) Glover. He married
the former Mary Louise Pritchard on July 3, 1945, in
Sherman, Texas, and she survives.
He worked as a coal miner for Freeman Coal Company for 40
years and also as a real estate agent in Kentucky prior to
his retirement. He served as an Army pilot during World
War II, and was a member of the U.M.W.A. and the Benton
Elks.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Mary Glover of
Benton; two daughters, Rebecca Cocke of Benton and Sandy
Sears of Nevada, Mo.; six grandchildren, Spencer and Corey
Peaugh, both of Benton, Beth Etters of Canton, Ga., Stacey
Kern of Fort Worth, Texas, Jason Sears of Nevada, Mo., and
James Sears, Frankenmuth, Mich.; 10 great-grandchildren,
Kyle and Aaron Peaugh, Kaitlin Etters, Elizabeth and
Kaylin Kern, Austin, Zach and Hailey Sears, and Mia and
Faith Sears; one brother, Richard Glover of Benton; two
sisters, Janette Marteny of Benton and Dixie Simmons of
West Frankfort; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Glover was preceded in death by his parents;

Martha Lee Goff, 69, of 100 N. Ward St., died at 10:20 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999 at the Franklin
Skilled Care Nursing Unit, Benton. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Masonic & Odd Fellows
Cemetery, Benton, with Father Donald Lenzini officiating. Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home, Benton, is in charge
of arrangements. Mrs. Goff was born Oct. 12, 1929 in Benton, the daughter of Leonard and Freda (Whaley) Hatchett.
She married Charles E. Goff and he died on Jan. 23, 1999. She was a housewife and a member of the St. Joseph
Catholic Church, Benton. Survivors include two daughters, Rebecca and husband Mark Mueller, Christopher, Julietta
Mullins, El Paso, Texas, a son, Charles and wife Diane Goff, Benton; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and an infant son, Lawrence Eugene Goff.

Lena Pearl "Pearline" GOODIN, 87, of Marion and formerly of Benton, passed
away at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2005, in St. Mary's Good Samaritan
Hospital in Mt. Vernon. Services will be held Wednesday, April 13, with
visitation from noon until 2 p.m. at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in
Benton, at which time services will begin. Interment will be at the Benton
Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery. The Rev. Roger WEBB will conduct the
memorial service.
Mrs. GOODIN was born June 14, 1917, the daughter of Joseph C. and Edith
(DAVIS) ARMSTRONG, on their farm located southwest of Benton. Mrs. GOODIN
married Lloyd REED and they had one daughter, Catherine "Kaye". She
subsequently married Roy E. GOODIN, Jr., and they had four children, Judith,
Mary Helen, Nancy and David.
Mrs. GOODIN leaves the following children, Catherine "Kaye" HOWELL and
husband, Charles, Judy MILLIGAN and husband, Leroy, Nancy SHAW and husband,
J.D., and David GOODIN and wife Pauletta. She leaves the following
grandchildren, Karla WEBB and husband, Willie, David BENNETT and wife,
Laurie, Alan BARNFIELD and wife, Vickie, Robert BARNFIELD, Ronnie MARTIN and
wife, Cindy, Heather and Jessie GOODIN, and Jackie, Dale, Janet, Lonnie and
Bobbie MILLIGAN. Her step-grandchildren are Crystal CULP, Carla HUDGENS,
Matt SHAW, and Linda von BURG.
Mrs. GOODIN loved children and those who spent time with her over the years
were Seth WATKINS, Clayton WEBB, Haley WEBB, Kaycey WEBB, Thomas BENNETT,
Timothy and Alyssa BARNFIELD, Devin and Cody CULP, Riane DICK, Stephanie
BARNFIELD LOVAN and Nicholas MARTIN.
Surviving is a sister, Ethel MALONE of Benton; a surviving sister-in-law,
Edith DeMOSS of Ohio, two nephews, Ronald MALONE and wife, Linda, and
Lindell FURLOW and wife Jean. She leaves many cousins of the DAVIS, STALCUP,
ARMSTRONG, DARNELL and HUGHES families.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Roy; her daughter, Mary
Helen; her grandson, Timothy M. BARNFIELD; her sister, Opal FURLOW; her
niece, Jeanne MALONE ELLBOGAN; and her cousin, Bobbie V. ARMSTRONG, who was

B.F. GRAY, 58, was almost instantly killed when run over by a coal car today.
Both legs were severed. He leaves a wife and several children. Burial will take
place at the East Fork Cemetery.

Nancy Gray, 86, Pioneer County Resident, Dies

Mrs. Nancy Ellen Gray, 86, a former resident
of this community, died early today in Detroit Mich., where
she has made her home since moving from here several years ago.
Mrs. Gray was a sister of Charles Rotramel,
1416 East Elm street, and of Miss Leota Rotramel, who resided
east of this city. In addition she is survived by three
sons, Frank Gray, Chicago; Joe Gray, Los Angeles, and James
Gray, St. Louis, and one other sister, Mrs. Irene McAdoo, California.
Mrs. Gray was the daughter of James Rotramel,
one of the pioneer residents of Franklin county, who, with
his family, moved to a farm east of this city from the south
in the middle 1800's.
The body will be shipped to West Frankfort
and will lie in state at the Union funeral home after Sunday
morning. Funeral services will be held at the East Fork
Baptist church Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with Rev.
Naaman Connors in charge. Burial will be in the East Fork cemetery.

Phillip H. Greenwood, died at the Fair Acres Nursing Home in Du Quoin, at 9 a.m.
on Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, in
the Mulkeytown Christian Church with Revs. Dean Guymon and Jerry Aken officiating.
Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Sesser. Friends may call after 6 p.m.
Monday at the Gilbert Funeral Home, Christopher, and from noon until time of service
at the church on Tuesday. Mr. Greenwood was born on Jan. 1, 1904, in Mulkeytown,
the son of George t. and Nellie (Tinsley) Greenwood. He was married to the former
Florence Hill who preceded him in death and later married Helen Maxedon Greenwood,
who survives. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Mulkeytown Christian
Church. He served 22 years on the Farm Bureau Board. In addition to his wife,
Helen, he is survived by two stepsons, J.C. Baumgarte and family of Herrin, and
Wayne Baumgarte and family of Chicago; a sister-in-law Stella Greenwood, several
nieces and nephews. Five brothers and six sisters preceded him in death.

Una Grace Grove, 79, of Lake of Egypt, passed away at home late Monday night, Dec. 13, 2004.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, in Maple Hill Cemetery, with
the Rev. Harold Quick of Sesser United Methodist Church officiating.
Arrangements are being handled by Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser.
The family requests memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, Inc., in lieu of flowers.
Grace was born on Nov. 7, 1925, in Atoka, Tenn., the daughter of Herman and Lucille (Armour)
Anderson. She married James Lee Grove on Sept. 14, 1944, in Memphis, Tenn.
Grace attended Lake of Egypt Christian Church, was a member of Lake of Egypt Ladies Golf Association,
past member of Little Egypt Arts Association, Marion Garden Club, and former president of Southern
Bell Garden Club. She was one of the first art students at Memphis School of Arts and won several
awards for her oil paintings. Grace had a great love of music, and learned to play the organ and
piano later in life.
Survivors include her husband of 60 years, James (Jim) Lee Grove; a son, James (Jim) Lee Grove Jr.
and daughter-in-law, Selena, of Jackson, Tenn.; a granddaughter, Sherry (Grove) Harpole and husband,
Heath, of Jackson, Tenn.; a sister, Nancy (Anderson) Alsbrook of Atoka, Tenn.; a sister-in-law, Kathy
Fornear Sapp of Columbia, Mo.; and a brother-in-law, Larry Grove of Lake of Egypt. Grace was a beloved
aunt to several nieces and nephews.
Grace was preceded in death by her parents; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, the Rev. Commodore and
Mable Grove, former pastor of the Sesser and Aldersgate United Methodist Churches; a brother, William
(Bill) Anderson Jr., of Memphis, Tenn.; and a sister-in-law, Maxine Cockrum of Marion.

Bertha L. Gulley
73, of Valier died at 5:30 a.m. Sunday at Franklin Hospital in Benton.
She was born on Aug. 11, 1913, in Hymera, Ind., the daughter of George and Bertha Hoover
Haywood. She married Claude Gulley. A homemaker, she was a member of the Second Baptist
Church in Valier. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, and one sister.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by four daughters, Leona Culp of Pekin, Mary
Gulley, Margaret Gulley, and Claudia Campbell, all of Springfield; five grandchildren;
three great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Jones of Valier; and one brother, Eugene
Haywood of Sesser. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Second Baptist Church in
Valier, with the Rev. Ted Arview and the Rev. John Overturf officiating. Burial will be
in Maple Hill Cemetery, Sesser. Gilbert Funeral Home, Christopher, is in charge of arrangements

GULLEY, SCOTT E.

Scott E. Gulley, 37, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo. as a result
of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, in the
Morton & Johnston Funeral Home, with the Revs. Larry Cook and Dale Carson officiating. Burial will be in the
Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery, Benton. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday to the funeral home. Scott
was born in Benton on Sept. 21, 1961, the son of Ralph E. and Stella (Hall) Gulley. On July 9, 1983, he married
Rebecca S. (Bays) Gulley. She survives. Mr. Gulley worked for Pepsi Cola Bottling Co. in Marion, and was of the
Baptist faith. In addition to his wife Rebecca, of Benton, he is survived by a son, Justin Gulley at home; a daughter,
Melissa Gulley at home; his parents, Ralph E. and Stella Gulley of Benton; a brother, Stephen Gulley of Benton; a sister,
Robyn Dees and husband Michael of Lake in the Hills; two nieces, Tiffany Dees and Breanna Gulley; his mother-in-law,
Aline Bays of Sesser. Scott was a very giving person. A loving husband, father, son and brother. He had made the choice
of giving the gift of life to others by being an organ donor. His grandparents, Fred and Lossie Gulley, Earl and Ruth Hall
and his father-in-law Albert Bays, preceded him in death.

Clarence Earl GUNTER, 58, of 210 N. Jefferson St., West
Frankfort, died at 4:30 p.m Wednesday in Union Hospital West
Frankfort, after a short illness.
He was a carpenter and member of Local 1196 of the
Carpenters Union, West Frankfort.
Mr. GUNTER was born June 10, 1913, in Franklin County the
son of Wesley and Sophie BOLL GUNTER.
He is survived by his wife Dorothea; a daughter, Donna
CORBETT of Morris City; a son, Earl Jr., stationed at NASA
Quansit Point, Rhode Island; his mother, sisters, Mrs. Carl
EDWARD. of Algonquin, Irene OVERTURF of Benton, Gladys AVERY
of Johnston City and Pauline MOYERS, Beulah NOLEN and Ruby
GOOD, all of West Frankfort; two grandchildren and one
great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be at 2 pm. Saturday at .the Union
Funeral Home, West Frankfort. The Rev. Maurice ABSHER will
officiate. Burial will be in the Denning Cemetery, West

Donald R. "Bootsie " GUNTER, age 76, of West Frankfort, passed away
September 3, 2007 at 4:37 p.m. at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt.
Vernon. He was born August 8, 1931 in West Frankfort to Leonard W. GUNTER
and Cloe (IRVIN) GUNTER.
Survivors include a son, Donald D. GUNTER and wife, Lydia of Highland, Ind.;
daughter, Julie GUNTER of Demotte, Ind., Karen GUNTER of Michigan; four
grandchildren and two great grandchildren.2 brothers, Charles B. GUNTER of
West Frankfort and Richard L. GUNTER of Demotte, Ind.; two sisters, JoAnn
HALL of West Frankfort and Nelma SHORT of Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Leonard W. GUNTER, sister,
LulaBell DARNELL..
Mr. GUNTER was a member of the West Frankfort Moose Lodge. He served in the
United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, September 7, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the
Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort with Rev. Roger Teal
officiating. Burial will be in the Brady Cemetery. Friends may call from 5

Norris City
Funeral services for Dorothy GUNTER, 60, of Norris City,
formerly of West Frankfort, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in
the Union Funeral Home in West Frankfort. Burial will be in
Denning Cemetery, near West Frankfort. Friends may call

Mrs. GUNTER died at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday in Ferrell Hospital
in Eldorado.
She was born April 29, 1914,in Springfield to Hector and
Toni DEPUE COLLARD. Her husband, Earl GUNTER, died in April,
1972.
Survivors include a daughter Donna CORBETT of Norris City; a
son, Earl GUNTER Jr. of Northfolk, Va.; two sisters, Viola
JACAWAY and Nellie BLACK, both of Springfield; two
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

William W. GUNTER, 85, of 211 S. Douglas St., West
Frankfort, died at 6:30 a.m. today.
He was born in Jackson County Nov. 15, 1879, the son of
Benjamin and Mary Lou LUCDIBB [sic] GUNTER. He was a retired
carpenter and a member of the Freeman Chapel Church, Freeman
Spur.
Mr. GUNTER leaves his wife, Sophie; daughters, Mrs. Carl
EUBANKS of Algonquin, Mrs. Irene OVERTURF of Benton, Mrs.
Gladys AVERY of Johnston City and Mrs. Pauline MOYERS, Mrs.
Ruby GOAD and Mrs. Beulah NOLEN, all of West Frankfort; sons
Herbert of Sullivan, William of Elgin, Ralph of Oilman, Earl
of West Frankfort and James of Chicago; a brother, Davie of
West Frankfort; 25 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Union
Funeral Home, West Frankfort. Rev. Paul RAMSEY will

Mrs. Sarah Gurley Dies at Her Home in Valier This Morning

Mrs. Sarah Ellen Gurley, age 52, passed away at her home in Valier this morning
at 9 o'clock, after a several months illness.
She is survived by her husband, Dave Gurley; two daughters, Miss Alene of Valier
and Mrs. Agnes Taylor of Hartford, and five sons, Wallace of Cottage Hills,
Richard of Bethalto, James of Hartford, Dave of Woodriver, and Alonzo of Nashville,
Tenn.
She is also survived by her mother, Mrs. Will Hiller of Woodriver; three sisters,
Mrs. Lydia Murry of Murphysboro, Mrs. May Corbett and Miss Edna Hiller of Woodriver,
and two brothers, Walter Hiller of Miami, Fla, and Allen Hiller of Woodriver.
