LAMASTUS, MARY L
Benton
Funeral services for Mary LAMASTUS, 66, of Star Route,
Christopher, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Russell
Funeral Home in Christopher.
The Rev. Marion BURZYNSKI will officiate. Burial will be in
Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton. Friends may call
after 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mrs. LAMASTUS died Tuesday evening in Franklin Hospital in
Benton.
She was born Nov. 23, 1909, in West City to Charlie and
Vienna MILLER DAVIS.
She was a member of the Aiken Grove Baptist Church, near
Benton. She was a nurse, last working at the Franklin
Hospital in Benton.
Survivors are her husband, Frances "Pennie" LAMASTUS; two
sisters, Pearl MANDRELL of Benton and Jennie WOODRUFF of
Round Lake; four brothers, Arlie DAVIS of Benton, Alex DAVIS
of Elgin, Henry DAVIS of Christopher, and Billy Gene DAVIS
of Spring Valley, Calif.

Funeral services for Monette LAMBERT, 64, of St. Jacob,
formerly of Benton, will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Poulson
Funeral Home in Benton.
Burial will be in Brady Cemetery in Akin. Friends may call
after 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Mrs. LAMBERT died at 7:30 a.m. today, June 11, 1976, in her
home.
She was the daughter of Casey and Rosetta ABBOTT HUNGATE.
Survivors are her husband, Frank; two sons, Casey CONNER of
Benton and Richard LAMBERT of Troy; a brother, Paul HUNGATE
of Akin; three sisters, Martha YAKABINIS of Benton, Ora Faye
DAVIS of Mt. Vernon, and Dolly KIRKPATRICK of West
Frankfort; and six grandchildren.

LAMPLEY, JAMES R.
Gulfport, Mississippi
James (Jim) R. Lampley, 79, formerly of Benton, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, in
Gulfport. He had been in ill health for some time. Services were held Monday morning,
Nov. 8, at Raiman Funeral Home in Gulfport. Jim was born Feb. 16, 1920. His parents
were Mattie L. and Ezra R. Wilson. Jim joined the USAF in 1941. He spent 22 years
in the service, and retired in 1963. He then entered Civil Service, where he stayed
for a number of years. He met his wife, Marion Craig at Kessler AFB in Biloxi. She
preceded him in death. Jim and Marion made their home in Gulfport, where they raised
four children, Joan, Jerry, Keith and Barbara, all of Mississippi. They survive,
along with two brothers, Glen Wilson of Benton and Carl Wilson of Sandwich. Brothers
Troy Lampley and Harvey Wilson also preceded him in death.
LAMPLEY, JOHN V.
John V. Lampley, 85, of Paradise Valley, passed away on February 12,
2008. Born January 9, 1923 in Franklin County, Illinois to Logan and Pauline
Lampley, John was a WWII Veteran having served as a Sergeant Major in the
Army aboard the SS Santa Isabel.
He traveled the South Seas including the islands of Hawaii, The Philippines,
Iwo Jima and the
Carolinas. John was predeceased by his loving wife of 66 years, Ruth, in
2006. He is survived by his daughters, Karen Lampley, Diane Ayers (Charles
K.) grandsons, James C. and David J., and great grandson, Cameron J. Ayers.
John set a great example for his family with his courage, strength and
humor. A Memorial service will be held at the National Memorial Cemetery,
23029 N. Cave Creek Road, Phoenix on Thursday, February 21st at 10:00 a.m.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower
Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014. Messinger Mortuary assisted the family.

LAMPLEY, KENNETH E.
Kenneth E. Lampley, age 77, of Thompsonville went home to
be with his Savior at 1:10 p.m., July 5, 2008 at the Anna
Veterans Home in Anna. He was born August 1, 1930, in
Thompsonville, to Asa Lampley and Neva (Absher) Lampley.
Kenneth was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, a farmer and
an accomplished fiddle player from Thomsonville. He played
fiddle at many a square dances and enjoyed the study of
Genealogy. He has been known to cut & split many cords of
wood for the elderly alongside his dear friend, Dale
McClerren. Kenneth is survived by sister: Mavis Hungate of
Benton; brother: Harold Lamplay of Benton; nieces: Lucinda
Nickerson, Rita Patton and husband Greg; nephews: Darryl
Hungate and wife Sue, Tom Hungate and wife Cathy, Danny
Lampley and wife Judy, Eddie Paul Lampley and wife Denice;
several great nieces and nephews; several great-great
nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his
parents and brother: Ernest Lampley. Funeral services will
be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 9, 2008 at Sloan
Funeral Home in Galatia, IL. with Rev. David Schlag
officiating. Interment will be in the Pleasant Hill
Cemetery in Thompsonville, IL. Visitation will be held
Wednesday, July 9, 2008 from 8 a.m. until the funeral hour
of 10 a.m. Kenneth will be missed by all who knew him.

A painting of Twin Oaks was presented to Kenny LAMPLEY by his daughter
Joanie LAMPLEY SIMS as a get-well gift. She painted the picture of the
building for him because he has worked so hard to keep it restored and to
keep it a city-owned historical landmark. Twin Oaks was built in 1938 by the
W.P.A. Kenny is currently recuperating from a broken hip. Family and friends

Kenneth James LAMPLEY was born to Alvis and Fay (WALKER) LAMPLEY in Benton on
March 30, 1930, and died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, at his home in Benton. He was a
lifelong Franklin County resident, and in January 2005 accepted the Lord Jesus
Christ as his savior. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at the
Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton, with the Rev. Ron CREMEENS
officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of
flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of the Good Samaritan in Mt.
Vernon.
He married Carmen HAYSE LAMPLEY on May 5, 1950, and she survives. In addition to
his wife, he leaves eight children: Debbie (and Carl) WILLIAMS of Ina, Kerrie
(and Jack) STEWART of Benton, Rick LAMPLEY of Logan, Joanie (and Stacy) SIMS of
Paducah, Ky., Greg (and Michelle) LAMPLEY of Christopher, Brian A. (and Cindy)
LAMPLEY of Benton, Lilli LOUCKS of Christopher and Russell LAMPLELY of Benton.
He leaves eight grandchildren, Jim (and Sonya) ELDRIDGE of Ewing, Amanda (and
Jason) VARNER of Marion, Ashley (and Ryan) CROSS of Grant Park, Ansley SIMS of
Paducah, Ky., Hayli LAMPLEY, Austin and Aszure LOUCKS of Christopher, and Elijah
LAMPLEY of Benton; and two great-granddaughters, Elizabeth VANDEKERKHOVE and
Brittany ELDRIDGE of Ewing.
He is survived by three sisters, Kay DONOVAN of Maple Park, Shirley CLAYTON, Sue
(and Joe) RONCHETTO, and one brother, Richard (and Clodena) LAMPLEY, all of
Benton; many nieces and nephews; and an aunt, Betty LAKEMEYER of Benton. He was
preceded in death by his parents, Alvis and Fay (WALKER) LAMPLEY; a brother,
Carroll LAMPLEY; twin daughters, Bonnie and Connie LAMPLEY; and a very special
grandson, Aren James LOUCKS.
He was a man of many talents and worked as a welder, brick layer, construction
worker and laborer during his lifetime. He was a member of the Benton Volunteer
Fire Department for 37 years, a member of the Benton City Council for six years,
and a 54-year member of the Laborers International Union, Local 529. He held the
office of secretary and treasurer for Local 529 for many years. He enjoyed the
outdoors and was an avid fisherman and camper for many years, and was also a
stock car driver and fan in his younger days. Everyone who knew him knows he was
an opinionated man who enjoyed writing letters to the editor to The Benton
Evening News and loved politics. He believed in what he thought was right and
was a strong advocate for preserving Twin Oaks. His greatest joy was his family.
He loved watching and playing with his grandchildren and spending time with his
family.

LAXTON, MORA
MORA LAXTON, SESSER, DIES
Mora LAXTON, 74, of Sesser died unexpectedly at 8 a.m. Friday at the home of
a friend, Alfred MOORE of Sesser. He had gone to MOORE'S farm home to help
Moore feed cattle.
Franklin County Coroner Eugene DORRIS said Mr. LAXTON died of a heart
attack. He was a retired coal miner. He was born Sept, 25, 1891, in Rock
Creek, the son of David and Mary FOSTER LAXTON. He was a deacon of the
Sesser First Baptist Church.
He leaves his wife, the former Ethel MOORE; sons, James of East St. Louis
and Doyle of Bellaire, Tex.; and six grandchildren. A daughter preceded him
in death.
Funeral services will be at 1 pm. today in Sesser Baptist Church. Rev. E. A.
SUMMER and Rev. Grady RANDOLPH will officiate. Burial will be in Horse
Prairie Cemetery, northeast of Sesser. Friends may call at the Brayfield

LEE, BYFORD G.
LEE, Byford G., 76, Pittsburg, PA., died Feb. 25, 1984. Mr. Lee was
born Jan. 21, 1908 in Macedonia, the son of Will and Bertha SNEED LEE.
Survivors include his wife, Carol LEE, Pittsburg, PA., one son, Robert
LEE, Chicago; one sister, Mrs. Wanda HOOD, Birmingham, AL., and two
grandchildren. Memorial services held at Johnson Funeral Home,
McLeansboro, Rev. Harl COCKRUM officiating.
LEE, EVAN R.
LEE, Evan R., 78, 621 Perkins Ave., Mt. Vernon, died at 6:40 p.m. Sept.
20, 1981 in Good Samaritan Hospital. He was an employee of the shoe
factory for 37 years before his retirement, and later was employed as a
bailiff at the Jefferson County Courthouse. Mr. Lee was born in
Macedonia June. 15, 1903, the son of Virgil M. and Janie S. MOSS LEE.
On July 3, 1924, he was married to Bessie R. JOHNSON, and she survives.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, William V. "Bill"
LEE of Springfield and Robert W. "Bob" LEE of Atlanta; nine
grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Lucille
WOOLARD and Mrs. Helen INGRAM, both of Mt. Vernon; and several nieces
and nephews. Mr. Lee was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church and
the Mt. Vernon Sunshine Center. He was preceded in death by his
parents. Funeral services at Hughey Funeral Home, Rev. George W.
WAGGONER officiating. Interment in Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens.
LEE, JOSEPHINE
Mrs. Josephine Lee, wife of the Rev. R. W. Lee, veteran Baptist minister of Benton,
passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. R. Gardner at Benton, Tuesday evening,
July 4th. She had reached the age of 70 years, 1 month and 26 days.
Mrs. Lee was born in Hamilton County and there grew to womanhood. She was married to
Robert W. Lee in 1872 and July 5th would have marked 61 years and nine months that
these fine people had walked hand in hand.
The young couple were converted and joined the Antioch Baptist Church at the same time,
this happening after the marriage. They retained their membership in the Antioch for
many years, but had been members of the East Benton Baptist Church since their removal
to Benton some four years ago.
Mrs. Lee had spent her entire life in Hamilton and Franklin Counties and had long been
known as one of the noblest of women.
She leaves five (sic) sons and two daughters, namely: John T. Lee of Macedonia; Marion
H Lee of West Frankfort; Norman D. Lee of Macedonia; Dr. I. E. Lee, pastor of the First
Baptist Church at Harrisburg; Mrs. Nellie Eickelmann of Chicago and Mrs. Cordelia Gardner
of Benton. Two daughters preceded her in death, Mrs. Effie Perry and Mrs. Elsie Smith.
The aged husband, Rev. R. W. Lee, is well known as a Baptist minister all over Southern
Illinois and during his active ministry earned the distinction of having been retained
as moderator of the Franklin Baptist Association for a period of 25 years.
Funeral services were conducted at the East Baptist church at 2:00 o'clock Thursday
afternoon, July 6th, with the pastor, Rev. C. E. Butler, being assisted by the former
pastor of the church, Rev. John B Maulding.
Interment followed at the Masonic and Odd Fellows cemetery.
In addition to the surviving husband and children named, there are a large number of
grandchildren and other relatives and friends who will mourn the passing of this good woman.
LEE, Robert W.
Funeral Services were held Wednesday afternoon for Eld. R. W. Lee, veteran Baptist
minister and former member of the county board of supervisors, who died at the home
of his daughter, Mr. J. R. Gardner, here Monday afternoon. Death followed a stroke
of paralysis and the aged minister had been in a state of coma for several hours
preceding his death.
Death worked quickly in culminating a home life that had given much to the community
of which it had been a part. Rev. Lee dying a few weeks after his wife had succumbed.
Rev. Lee was 83 yeas of age and for many years was an outstanding figure in Southern
Illinois church circles. He was moderator of the Franklin Baptist church at West
Frankfort for four years beginning about 1902, when the church had services but twice
a month.
In addition to his work with the West Frankfort church, Rev. Lee pastored a number
of rural church ministry. He is the father of Rev I. E. Lee, pastor of the First
Baptist church of Harrisburg and Marion Lee, former member of the West Frankfort
City Council, now living east of West Frankfort.
He leaves in addition to the daughter at whose home he died, one other daughter,
Mrs. Mallia Eickleman, of Chicago. There are also three other sons, John Lee of
Macedonia; N. T. Lee of Benton; and B. L. Lee of West Frankfort

DOUBLE FUNERAL FOR AKIN COUPLE
Benton, ILL., Feb. 23 - A husband and wife in their 70's died within 24
hours at their Akin, Ill., home.
Norman D. Lee, 74, died yesterday. His wife, Nancy Eva Lee, 71, died
yesterday. Both deaths were from natural causes.
Double funeral service will be Sunday.
LEFFLER, KATHERINE HARGROVE

Katherine Myrtle Hargrove Leffler, 86, a former Benton resident died Friday, June
18, 1999, in the Woodlands Convalescent Center, Newburgh, Ind. Services were held
at 11 a.m. Monday at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home, Benton, with Father Sy Loehrlein
officiating. Burial was in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery. Mrs. Leffler was
born on Dec. 17, 1912, in Benton, the daughter of Elmer and Bessie (Reed) Hargrove.
She was known to many local children as "Nanny Kate". She owned and operated grovery
stores for approximately 50 years, The first store was East Side Market, followed
by Kate's Market, both located on North McLeansboro St., in Benton. She was a member
of St. Rupert's Catholic Church in Newburgh. Survivors include one daughter, Pat
O'Sullivan and husband Bill, Evansville; three grandchildren, Sheryl O'Sullivan,
Redlands, Calif.; Scott "Tag" O'Sullivan, Bradenton, Fla., Stacia Schofield, Louisville,
Ky. and six great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sudden

LEWEY, EDITH ADALINE
Mrs. Edith Adaline Lewey, who was injured in an automobile accident west
of Mt. Vernon Saturday night, died at 9:25 last night at Good Samaritan
Hospital.
Mrs. Lewey, an employee of the Granada Shop here, resided at 2711 Mannen
street. Her age was 40 years, one month and five days.
She had been unconscious since the accident, in which her husband,
Harold, and two other persons were injured.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Myers Chapel and
burial will be in Tower Grove cemetery at West Frankfort.
The body will remain at Myers Chapel, where friends may call at any time
after 10 a.m. Saturday.
Mrs. Lewey was born November 22, 1910 in Tennessee, the daughter of John
and Katie Lee (Reid) Weaver.
She was married in October 1937 to Harold Lewey, who survives.
Besides her husband, she is survived by her mother, Mrs. Katie Grady of
West Frankfort and a brother, John R. Weaver of Benton.

She was born Feb. 27, 1885, a daughter of William and Martha COSBY LEWIS.
She was married to Albert LEWIS, who preceded her in death.
She was a member of the Church of Christ in Sesser and was a resident of
Franklin County, all her life.
She leaves a son, Vernon of Benton; a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy SILKWOOD of
Merrillville, Ind.; sisters, Mrs. Hurley UHLS of West Frankfort, Mrs.
Gertrude CARTER of Christopher, Mrs. Maggie PHARIS of Mulkeytown and Mrs.
Belba STOFFEL of Belleville.

MRS. HAZEL LEWIS, 69, WEST FRANKFORT, DIES
Mrs. Hazel Lewis, 69, of 705 S. Logan St., West Frankfort,
died at 11 a.m. Thursday in Union Hospital, West Frankfort.
She was born March 10, 1897, near McLeansboro, the daughter
of John and Edith MORRIS BAUGH. She had lived in West
Frankfort 50 years. Her husband Hubert died in July 1960.
She was a member of the West Frankfort First Methodist
Church.
She leaves daughter, mrs. Homer WHITESIDE of West Frankfort
and Mrs. Harold EWING of Goreville; a foster daughter, Mrs.
Dorothy DILLOW of Anna; a sister, Mrs. Oakley HAYES of
Herrin; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Union Funeral
Home, West Frankfort. Rev. Roscoe GANT will officiate.
Burial will be in Odd Fellow Cemetery, West Frankfort.

Funeral Home for Hubert LEWIS, 77, 306 S. Short St., West
Frankfort, who died of a heart attack Thursday at his home.

Mr. LEWIS was a retired meat cutter for the Mercantile Co.,
Orient. He was born March 26, 1883, in Kentucky, and lived
most of his life in West Frankfort.
He leaves his wife, Hazel, daughters Mrs. Harold EWING of
Goreville, Mrs. Homer WHITESIDE of Danville, Mrs. Dorothy
DILLOW of Anna; five grandchildren and two

Funeral services for John A. LEWIS, 83, of 707 N. Madison
St., Benton, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mitchell Funeral
Home, Benton.

the Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery, Benton.

Mr. LEWIS died at 10:35 a.m. Saturday in the Veterans
Administration Hospital, Marion. He had been ill three
years.
He was a retired attendant at Hines Veterans Hospital in
Chicago, a veteran of World War I, and a member of the
American Legion and World War I Barracks No. 308 both in
Benton.
Mr. LEWIS was born Dec. 5, 1889, the son of Wayman and
Martha WHEELER LEWIS. He lived in Franklin County most of
his life.
His wife, the former Dessie FLANNIGAN, preceded him in
death.
He is survived by a daughter, Velma LEWIS, of Benton.

OPAL LEWIS, 79, SESSER, DIES
Opal LEWIS, 79, of Sesser, died Friday in Marshall Browning
Hospital, Du Quoin.
Mr. LEWIS was born Oct 28, 1890, in Franklin County, the son
of Cassie and Martha COOK LEWIS. He was a retired miner and
farmer and was a deacon at the First Baptist Church of
Sesser.
He and his wife, the former Kate HARRISON, were married 59
years.
Besides his wife, Kate, he leaves sons, Harrison of Sesser
and Don of Steger; a daughter, Mrs. Helen TEFFERTILLER of
Herrin; a sister, Mrs. Icy McBRIDE, also of Sesser; eight
grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist
Church, Sesser, with the Rev. Jerrell WHITE and the Rev. Guy
TACKETT officiating.
Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Sesser.

LIGON, WILLIAM DANIEL
William Daniel LIGON, 81, a well known retired Ina farmer
died at 1:23 a.m. today in Jefferson Memorial Hospital. He
had been hospitalized three weeks. Funeral services will be
held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Free Will Baptist Church
of Ina, conducted by Rev. Riley BURTON. Burial will be in
Bethel Cemetery south of Benton. Friends may call at the
Ina Funeral Home after 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Mr. LIGON was born March 27, 1875 in Franklin County,
Illinois, the son of D. G. and Melvina (RAE) LIGON. He was
married to Zula Richardson. Surviving are three sons, Guy,
William and Ted of Ina; six daughters, Mrs. Gladys DRENNAN
of Mt. Vernon; Mrs. Rusie FISHER of Ina; Mrs. Wilma COOK of
West Frankfort; Mrs. Edith ODLE of West Frankfort; Mrs.
Marie BOWMAN of Everett, Wash.; and Mrs. Wanda McLAUGHLIN of
Ina. Three children died in infancy. Also surviving are 31
grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.

LIGON, ZULLA
Mrs. Zulla LIGON, wife of Dan, died at 12 o'clock noon
Sunday at the family home, known as the Cal BROWN farm near
New Hope. The family lived on this farm for the last 30
years. Mrs. LIGON was born near Bethel in Franklin County
58 years ago. She was united in marriage with Dan LIGON 35
years ago. Before her marriage her name was RICHARDSON.
She is survived by her husband and the following children:
Mrs. Ruie FISHER of Chicago; Guy LIGON of Benton; Mrs. Wilma
COOK of Ina; Mrs. Edith ODLE of Akin; Mrs. Marie BOWMAN of
Xenia; William, Charles, Edward and Wanda at home; and one
step-daughter, Mrs. Felix DRENNAN of Ina; six grandchildren
and six step-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held today at 1 p.m. in the Free Will

Mrs. LIGON was for many years a member of the Free Will
Baptist Church and its work. She was faithful to all the
duties of wife and mother, and her home and loved ones were
uppermost in her heart.

LINK, JOHN ROBERT
Benton
John Robert Link, 75, of 403 W. Church St., died Wednesday, June 16, 1999 in the
Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Marion. Services will be at noon Saturday in the
Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home, Benton, with the Rev. Roger Ellsworth officiating. Burial,
with military rites, will be in the Jackson Grove Cemetery, Akin. Visitation will
be Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon at the funeral home. Mr. Link was born Aug. 10, 1923,
in Hamilton County, the son of Elton Bell and Delta (Brownlee) Link. He married
the former Virginia Ruth Davis and she preceded him in death. He was a retired coal
miner having worked at Freeman United Mine #3 in Waltonville. He was a World War II
U.S. Army veteran and served in the 1906 Engineer Aviation Battalion. He was a member
of the Tuscan Masonic Lodge, Broughton, and a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church
Benton. Survivors include a daughter, Janice Holman, Benton; two grandchildren,
Chad Holman, Whittington, Jamia and husband David Babington, Ewing; two great-
grandchildren, Connor Link Babington and Grayson Davis Babington; a brother, Jack
Link, McLeansboro; two sisters, Anita Miller, Benton, Bonnie Sue Harrison, Murphysboro;
several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife.
LINDSEY JR., CLARENCE

Clarence Lindsey, Jr., 75, 3070 Hyde Park Road, died Monday, July 12, 1999, in the Marion Memorial Hospital.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery, Benton. Visitation will
be from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home. Mr. Lindsey was born Aug. 28, 1923, the
son of Clarence Lofton Lindsey, Sr. and Elva Alice (Beaver) Lindsey. He married the former Audrey Ilene
Bigham on Nov. 30, 1941, and she survives. He was a retired coal miner and U.S. Army veteran. He was a member
of the Church of Christ, West Frankfort. In addition to his wife, Audrey of Royalton, he is survived by two
daughters, Elva and husband Kenneth Hungate, Benton, Beverly and husband Wesley Frain, Benton; three sons,
Jim Lindsey, William Keith and wife Rebecca Lindsey, Bradley and wife Tammy Lindsey, all of Royalton; 24
grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen and husband John Eldridge, West Frankfort. He was
preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Bobby Lindsey and one sister, Lois Lindsey Wagner.
LITTLE, EMMA
Mrs. Emma Little, 76, widow of Isaac Little, died early today at her home,
402 North Madison street in Benton, following a lingering illness. Mrs.
Little had been bedfast for two years. She resided with her brother-in-law
and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Watts, in Benton. Her husband lived to
celebrate his 100th birthday anniversary. Funeral arrangements were

Mrs. Betty Lucille LITTLEHALE, 45, of 608 N. 13th St..
Herrin, died at 1 a.m. today in Herrin Hospital after a
lengthy illness.
She was born May 27, 1925, in Franklin County, the daughter
of Ernest and Permelia SHORT BROWN. She was married to Ben
F. LITTLEHALE.
She is survived by her husband; her father of Benton; sons,
Lt. Robert Allan LITTLEHALE of Ogden, Utah and Ronald Louis
LITTLEHALE of Herrin; two grandchildren; brothers, Everett
BROWN of Bethalto and Louie BROWN of Rt. 2, Mulkeytown; and
sisters, Mrs. Blanche GOFF of Christopher, Mrs. Mildred
LAWRENCE of Rt. 2, Mulkeytown and Mrs. Virginia WHITE of
Lawndale, Calif.

LIVESAY, CARLYN L.

Carlyn Livesay, 81, formerly of Benton, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999. A Memorial service will be held
a 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999 at the First United Methodist Church in Benton, with visitation
beginning at 1:30. At her request, Mrs. Livesay will be cremated. Mrs. Livesay was born Jan. 28,
1918, in Benton, the daughter of Thomas and Ethel Young. For nearly twenty years, Carolyn taught
many area children in her Jack and Jill nursery school before retiring to Florida with her husband
in 1978. Her dedication to the Methodist Church was demonstrated through her many activities with
the church in Benton, as well as Ft. Myers. Mrs. Livesay is survived by one brother Gene H. Young
and wife Pat of Ft. Myers, Fla.; sister-in-law Hazel Young of Benton; two sons, Harry and wife Elizabeth
of Showlow, Az., and Michael and wife Nancy of Marion; four grandsons, Jeff Livesay and wife Kimberly of
Long Beach, Calif; Scott Livesay of Southern, Calif; Stephen Livesay of Benton; and Kevin Livesay and wife
Selinda of Akin; four granddaughters, Kimberly Livesay and husband Dale Houseworth of Benton; Robin Culbreth
and husband Stacy of Benton; Beth Livesay of Herrin; and Jennifer Livesay of Marion; and two great-grandchilden,
Nicholas and Emily Culbreth. She was preceded in death by her husband Harry, and her brother William R. Young.

James Loosier, 71, of 804 N. McLeansboro St., died at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct.. 12, 1999, at his home.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery, Benton,
with the Rev. Bill Perry officiating. Graveside military rites will be performed by the Benton American
Legion and V.F.W. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of service Friday, at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral
Home, Benton. Mr. Loosier was born June 6, 1928, in Courtland, Ala., the son of Jesse and Lois (McGregor)
Loosier. He married the former Berdella Aldrich on April 4, 1988, and she survives. He retired from the Joy
Manufacturing Company, where he worked as a machine inspector. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the
Korean conflict. He was a member of the Benton American Legion Post 280, a 50 year member of the Courtland
Masonic Lodge, and a member of the Scottish Rites Bodies, Belleville. He was of the Protestant faith. Survivors
include his wife, Berdella Loosier, Benton; a son, James C. Loosier, Kodak, Tenn.; a stepson John Cambron, Benton;
a stepdaughter, Sheryl Cambron, Davis, Calif.; two grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren; a sister, Irene Terry,
Decatur, Ala.; three brothers, Wayne Loosier, Courtland, Ala., Carl Loosier, Leighton, Ala.,, Don Loosier, Houston,
Texas, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial contributions may be made to the
Hospice of Southern Illinois, 1110 North Johnson, Marion, 62959, and will be accepted at the funeral home.
LOUCKS, JAMES ELMER

James Elmer Loucks, 63, died at 12:45 a.m. on Friday, June 18, 1999, in the Good Samaritan Regional Health
Center, Mt. Vernon. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 21, in the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home
in Sesser, with Brother Mark Minor and the Rev. Gene Outland officiating. Burial will be in the Horse Prairie
Cemetery, Sesser. Friends may call from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Sunday to the funeral home. Mr. Loucks was born on
April 4, 1936 in Scheller, the son of Enro and Gladys (Madray) Loucks. His first wife was Mona Loucks, who died
April 8, 1994. He later married Christine Guido in Whittington on Jan. 6, 1996. She survives. He worked in
maintenance and attended the Whittington Baptist Church. In addition to his wife Christine, he is survived by
three sons, Randy, Ray and Jerry Loucks of Sesser; one daughter, Rita Gonzales, Dallas, Texas;two stepsons,
Johnny and Jerry Conner; several grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four brothers, Carl Loucks and Clifford
Loucks of Scheller, Carson and Dean Loucks of Sesser; one sister, Mary Panzier Tennison of Belle Rive; several
nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and one brother.
LOWERY, ROBERT WAYNE
LOWERY, Pvt. Robert Wayne, 19, killed on Iwo Jima, Feb. 19, 1945. "The
body of Pvt. Robert Wayne LOWERY of the US Marine Corps, grandson of
Mrs. LaFayette HAMILTON of South Jackson Street, McLeansboro, who was
killed while fighting Japs in the Pacific, arrived here today (April 22,
1948) for burial on familiar soil. Pvt. LOWERY was one of the Marines
who stormed ashore on Iwo Jima, halfway between Saipan and Tokoyo, and
in a grim battle of annihilation wiped out strong dug-in positions one
by one. He lost his life doing so on Feb. 19, 1945, a few days more
than a month after he had reached his 19th birthday. Military rites
will be held at the Methodist church in Macedonia but the arrangements
had not yet been completed this morning by his father, Ralph C. LOWERY
of Salem, who was here when the escorted casket arrived in McLeansboro
today. LOWERY was reared at Macedonia in the home of his grandparents,
but he was working at Alton when he entered service in April, 1944. He
had been in uniform less than a year when killed. His survivors include
the grandmother, his father, six half-brothers and two half-sisters, all
of whom live in Salem with their father. Mother of the victim died
several years ago. She was Rue HAMILTON LOWERY. The Sanders Funeral
Home is in charge.
LOWERY, SARAH M.
Aged Woman Dies Yesterday Near Ewing
Mrs. Sarah M Lowery, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bill Darr, two miles west
of Ewing, Wednesday evening at 6 o'clock, following a protracted illness. She was 74
years old.
Mrs. Lowery is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Bill Darr, Mrs. Otis Prowell and Mrs.
McCann, all of near Ewing.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Ridge cemetery two miles
east of Ewing, with Rev. Riley Burton oficiating.
LYDAY, KENNETH
Odin
Kenneth Lyday, died at 8:45 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, in his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m.
Tuesday, Sept. 28, in the Irvin Funeral Home in Odin, with the Rev. Randy Shibilo officiating. Graveside
services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton. Friends may
call Tuesday to the Irvin Funeral Home after 9 a.m. until time of service. Military rites will be conducted
at the cemetery. Mr. Lyday was born in Benton, on Aug. 7, 1933, the son of Clarence and Dollie (Haggard)
Lyday. He was maried in Lake Villa on Dec. 18, 1966 to Opal (Sanson) Lyday. She survives. He drove a school
bus for West Bus Service and owned and managed a Phillips 66 Sation in Salem and operated a concession
stand at the Belleville Outdoor Theater. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Air Force.
He had lived at Odin the last 8 years and prior to that in Salem. In addition to his wife Opal, he is survived by four
sons, Larry Lyday of Odin, Robert Lyday of Kinmundy, Craig Lyday of Odin, and Daryl Lyday of Odin; one daughter,
Robyn Lyday of Odin; a brother Larry Lyday of rural Centralia and a sister, Ruby Thurmond of Benton; nine
grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Carl Lyday, sisters, Shirley Stafford and
Berniece Sanford.
