SMITH, ANDREW JACKSON
Andrew Jackson SMITH, son of W. C. SMITH and Mary Hartman SMITH, was born in Galatia,
Illinois on December 16, 1865. He lived practically all of his life in Saline and
Franklin Counties, being in business in the city of Benton, and the villages of
West End and Thompsonville, IL. Mr. SMITH was married to Amy Magdline Jones on
November 3,1889. They were the parents of four (4) sons. Albert, James Weaver,
William, and Glen. Albert died when quite young. The other sons with their mother
survive. Mr. SMITH has been failing in health some five or six years. He was very
frail in body, but kept going about until the seventh day of July this year. He
passed away at his home in Thompsonville,IL at 1:05 p.m. on Wednesday September
21, 1932. His wife, sons, and daughters-in-law have given him the the tenderest
possible care during these weeks of his illness. On a morning last March at the
beginning of the revival services at the Methodist Church in Thompsonville,
Revenends, Richardson, Harris, and Sutton visited " Uncle Andy". It was during
this visit that he made the full surrender. He had been under conviction some
weeks before. His conviction started with pleading and prayers by his youngest
son, Glen, who seemed to carry a heavy burden for his fathers lost spiritual
condition. Our hearts were happy when we learned that " Uncle Andy SMITH" had
accepted Christ as his personal savior. God's people have prayed earnestly for
his conversion. "Uncle Andy" has died a child of God. John the beloved, confronted
himself and encouraged us with the assurance that we are now the sons of God,but
it doth not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that, when he shall appear,
we shall be like him for we shall see him as heirs. What could give more zest
and joyful hope to those who love and worship here, than to know that by and
bny they shall behold him, and in some blessed and marvelous way not only see
him as he is , but be like him. In that resurection life our physical weakness,
sickness, and diformities shall have all passed and we shall be in a perfection
of beauty and holy harmony with our LORD. Besides his wife, sons, and daughters-
in-law the near kinsmen who mourn his loss are three (3) grandsons, A.J., Harold,
and Glen Junior, a half brother W. A. SMITH of Galatia, who has been very faithful
in everyway to Mr. Andrew Jackson SMITH, also leaving several nieces and nephews.
His father William C. SMITH and his mother Mary Hartman SMITH, two brother Thomas
efferson SMITH, and George SMITH, one own sister Hannah SMITH, and a half sister
Sarah J. ? have gone to their reward. Deceased has always been held in high esteem,
both in social and business life, by his many friends and acquaintances. And they
extend heart felt sympathy to the family in this sad hour of separation. Funeral
services were held at the Lebanon Presbyterian Church, near Galatia, IL. Friday
at 2:00p.m. September 23, 1932, with Rev. Harvey Kimmel officiating. Interment
was made in the Lebanon cemetery.

SWOFFORD, ELIZA JANE
Eliza Jane Swofford, wife of J W Swofford, and daughter of Heriam and Mattie Fish, was
born October 28, 1854 in Tyler County, Virginia (now West Virginia). In the year 1869
together with her father, one sister and three brothers, she moved to the state of Kansas.
In the early seventies she became acquainted with J W Swofford; and they were united in
marriage on Dec 17th, 1874, in the state of Kansas, by Elder J R Williams a pioneer Baptist
preacher from Southern Illinois. Soon after their marriage they came to Franklin County,
Illinois, the boyhood home of her husband, and she has resided in and near Benton ever since.
Her companion having passed away in February 1910.
She professed a hope in her Saviour early in life and while yet in Virginia joined the United
Baptist Church and was baptized in the Ohio River. But after her arrival in Illinois, she
together with her husband united with the Salem Primitive Baptist church in Benton, Illinois
and was baptized by Elder Josiah Harris in May 1877. For more than forty-five years she has
been a devoted and consistent member of that church. And during all that time her home was
open to the Baptist and she never seemed happier than when extending the hospitality of her
home to those she loved. To the ministers of her church, her home had a special welcome and
many indeed are the distinguished ministers who have shared her hospitality.
Sister Swofford in her youth received a good education and during her entire life maintained
a keen interest in the cultural things; and found especial interest in the
religious papers of her faith. And since the death of her husband in 1910, has been the
faithful clerk of her church.
One week prior to her death, when the seriousness of her condition was reached, she was
taken to the home of her brother, Elder W A Fish in Benton where loving hands could
better minister to her needs. During her suffering she manifested the same unshaken and
unshrinking faith that had characterized her walk through life. She approached the
end with an unfaltering trust, as one who wraps the drapery of her couch about her and lies
down to pleasant dreams.
While she had not children of her own, she found great delight in the children of her brothers
and sisters, who always felt her home their own. She was the third child of
a family of ten children and is now survived by three brothers, all of whom are present
today: Elder W A Fish of Benton, Illinois; J R Fish of Centerville, Kansas; and A C
Fish of Olathe, Kansas besides a number of nephews and nieces, relatives and friends to
mourn her loss.
The funeral was held at the Salem Primitive Baptist church in the city of Benton, Illinois,
on Sunday April 20, A D 1924, at 2 o'clock pm and was attended by a large concourse of
people from different sections of Southern Illinois bearing evidence of the high esteem
and regard in which she was held by those who knew her. Elder F M Pope of Vandalia,
Illinois preached the funeral discourse taking his text from First Thessalonians, Chapter 4;
verse 16; dealing with the Resurrection.
After the funeral services were concluded, the remains were taken to the family lot at the
Sowfford Cemetery East of Benton and interred by the side of her late husband, J W
Swofford, there to await the resurrection morning.
