1. Samuel I. Goodell Sr. was born from 1 Apr 1788 to 22 Feb 1789 in Hartland Town, Windsor Co., VT, died on 2 Sep 1845 in Ellisville, Fulton Co., Illinois at age 57, and was buried in Sep 1845 in Wiley Cemetery, Deerfield Twp., Fulton Co., IL.
General Notes: Samuel Goodell in War of 1812 was reported to have been called up with Co. G (Hobbs) Mass. militia as rank of private. Payroll for Capt. Alpheus Field's Company of Infantry, 1st. Regiment called into service to rendevous at Portland. Sept. 14, 1814 and discharged at Portland, Sept20, 1814. They were called into service for the defense of Portland.

Samuel is reported to have been in Leicester Twp., Genesee/Livingston county, NY during the period 1818 to 1828.U.S. The Census of 1820 for Leicesteer Twnshp., Genesee/Livingston County, NY, lists a Samuel Goodell.

Discrepancy in the date of birth: Calculated birth date from Samuel's tombstone data shows that Samuel died, Sept 2. 1845 at age of 56 years, 6 mo. and 11 days and ,(working backwards this would show his birth date as being 22 Feb,1789) However, Hartland town records show his date of birth as 26 Sep 1788.

From Don Gates: "Another interesting point: --I have always been concerned with the fact that Samuel Goodell's Military records for War of 1812 showed in the Massachusetts Records that he was called from Falmouth for the defense of Portland. I learned that the Maine militia records at that time, were part of the Massachusetts militia due to the fact that Maine did not gain Statehood and enter the Union until Mar. 15,1820--Also there is and was, a Falmouth, Maine Just 5 miles North of Portland. Now the scenario makes sense."

Hutchinson, state of Kansas, county of Pratt, a resident of Coats he signed on 24 March 1898in front of A Notary Public that "I was with James Goodell in the capacity of Physician at the time of his death (James Goodell) March12,1887. That was the first I treated him. He had been attended previously for Dys// 7 Pe// by D r. R.D. Horvions (sp.)- This statement was in his Civil War Pension records.

SECOND WIFE: Susan Higdon age 28 when he married her on July 16, 1882 in McPherson Co., KS. They had a child Mary Etta Goodell, born Dec 8,1883.Susan died 2/22/36. After James Goodell died she married William R.Tooland then William H. Ensor of Springfield, County of Sagamon, Ill.

"D", 55th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment Service Record shows him to be born in New York; Age 36 yrs,6 mo. at enlistment; Occupation Farmer; Volunteered on 21 st March 1865 to serve as a soldier in the Army of The United States for a period of one year unless sooner discharged; Enlisted at Mt. Sterling, Ill,9th Congressional District, 69th sub- district by Capt. B.F. Westlake, Mustering Officer. He was credited to Lee, Fulton County, Ill ,Bounty paid $33.33 dollars; James signed with his mark "X" so evidently did not write--Personal data--James had blue eyes, brown hair, light complexion and was 5 ft. 7&3/4 inches high--Assigned as private in Company "D" 55th Regiment, Illinois Infantry and arrived at Camp Butler , Ill on March 28, 1865; Was present on the Muster rolls for March, April, May & June 1965; Admitted to General Hospital, De Valls Bluff, Arkansas, hospital no.
1073, Ward B for Diagnosis "Erysipelas" sp.& returned to duty August 5,1865; Mustered out with Co. D, 55th Regt on MO roll dated at Little Rock, Arkansas, Aug 14, 1865; last paid to April 30 1865; Clothing account showed he drew $59.82 since March , 1865 and bounty paid was $33.33. He drew a pension until his death according to his daughter Mary Etta (Goodell) Listman of Danville, Vermillion Co., Illinois.

Per Ken Rob: "I have all of the records of Mary Etta & Susan Higdon (Goodell) (Tool) and then Ensorr (sp.) I have the Guardianship appointments for Mary Etta and all of Susan's and Mary Ettas filing for pension along with statements they made to support pension application. They are in my files under Goodell info."

Don Gates has visited Danville and his place of death at Pratt, Kansas and as of 0ct. 1996 had not located a burial site or obtained an obituary.
James married Susan Higdon on 16 Jul 1882 in Kansas. Susan was born on 4 Apr 1854 in Iowa, died on 22 Feb 1936 in Springfield, Sagamon Co, IL (Age 76 Yrs, 10 MO, 18 Days) at age 81, and was buried on 25 Feb 1936 in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, IL.

NOTE: These 1870 census records show The families in farms adjacent to each other in Deerfield Twp. It also shows Catharine living with her daughter and son-in-law, Jacob Goodell in 1870.

Cemetery Records, Henderson-Sinnett Chapel Cemetery: Jacob died 6/18/1901 but the book says he was 72 years when he died. They could have made a typo. Although Jacob and Henrietta are both buried at the Wiley Cemetery, they do not have stones and it is not known if they are buried in same area or not.
