Obituary of Henry Lafayette Wrestler
Unknown newspaper, August 1, 1936
Henry L. Wrestler, Kerton Township, Burns To Death.
Sons and Others Nearby In Futile Effort To Save Life Of Aged Man. Flames Sweep 80 Acre Field
Henry Lafayette Wrestler, 74 year old Kerton township farmer,
was burned to death, yesterday when sparks from the exhaust pipe of a
baler set fire to a straw stack while he and his son, Grover C.
Wrestler, two grandsons, and a neighbor, Lafayette Mahan were baling
straw on the Charles Welch farm in Isabel township. The right side of
the son's face was badly burned as he attempted to rescue his father.
Efforts to rescue the aged man, a cripple since childhood, were futile,
because of the rapid spread of the flames. Grover Wrestler told a
Ledger reporter, the body burned to a crisp, portions of the arms and
legs burned away, lay in the charred field for several hours before
being removed to a Havana mortuary - It was some time after the start
of the fire before Dr. R. H. Maguire, deputy coroner, was notified. In
describing the scene, Grover Wrestler said: "We started to bale about
30 bales of straw and had finished 22 of them when I looked up to see
flames shooting along the stubble under the baler. He never had a
chance, for almost instantly, it was enveloped in a mass of flames ---
an --- although --- Mr. Mahan and myself made every possible effort to
reach him, rescue was impossible. He was penned in and before we could
move the baler, was covered with the flaming straw. The flames spread
rapidly, destroying the baler and sweeping over the 80-acre field,
tinder dry as a result of the recent hot weather and lack of rain,
almost before the men and boys were able to flee to safety.
BOY IS HERO - The hero of the farm tragedy was 11 year old
Robert Wrestler, grandson of the fire victim; who, in testifying at an
inquest conducted at the Poetizing Mortuary in Havana last evening,
told how he grabbed a can containing gasoline and carried it from the
blazing machine. Rushing back, he called to his grandfather, telling
him to climb over the machine. The lad then made an effort to start the
engine of a tractor attached to the baler so that it could be moved,
but was forced to abandon the plan as the flames spread toward him. The
coroner's jury, after hearing the details of the starting of the fire,
efforts to rescue, the aged man, and viewing the body: returned a
verdict, declaring death due to third degree burns, accidentally
sustained. Mr. Wrestler was born in Kenton Township, July 09, 1862, and
had spent his entire life in the community, where he was known as an
industrious and efficient farm operator. Funeral Services were held
this morning at the Pfetzing Mortuary.

Obituary of Herbert L. Blue
The Salt Lake Tribune, Salt Lake City, Utah, February 21, 2006
picture
Herbert L. Blue 1929 ~ 2006
Herbert L. Blue died Sunday, February 19, 2006, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The son of Charles and Lucy Blue, he was born on the family farm near Astoria, Illinois on May 18, 1929.
Herb is survived by his wife Alberta; children Eleanor (George)
Marlar of Phoenix, Arizona; Charles (Lynne) of Wanship, Utah; Maxine
(John) White of Vallejo, California; Lawrence of Silver Spring,
Maryland; Kay (Duane) Bush of Salt Lake City, Utah; grandchildren Megan
and Marisa Bush, Luke and Gwendolyn Blue, and Davis and James Marlar;
brother, Charles of Blandinsville, Illinois; and sister, Lois Speed of
Kerrville, Texas.
Herb attended Cooper School, an eight-grade, one-room country
school near the farm. When he was 13, after the death of his father,
the family moved into the nearby farm community of Astoria, where he
completed grade school and in 1947 graduated from Astoria High School.
He developed a love of reading and participated in school plays. When
he grew taller than his classmates, he began playing basketball. With
limited talent, he developed a love of the game that carried on
throughout his life. During his summers and after graduating from high
school, Herb worked as a farmhand for local farmers and as a laborer at
the International Harvester plant in Canton, Illinois. In June of 1948,
he enlisted in the Army. After completing basic training at Fort Knox,
Kentucky and photography and printing courses at Fort Belvoir,
Virginia, he was assigned as a draftsman in the intelligence section at
post headquarters, Fort Bliss, Texas. The Korean War broke out in 1950,
and his service was extended from three years to four, though he was
never sent overseas. He was a sergeant and chief clerk by the spring of
1951 when he transferred into the 709th anti-aircraft gun battalion
with responsibility for intelligence activities. The outfit was
transferred to Fort Sheridan, Illinois in the spring of 1951, assigned
to protect Chicago from enemy air attack along Lake Michigan. A part of
his final year was spent at tent sites in North Chicago. He was
discharged from the Army in June 1952 with the rank of Sergeant First
Class. He worked in Chicago that summer as a trainee for Household
Finance Corporation, collecting overdue loan payments. In the fall he
moved to Moline, Illinois and was hired as a draftsman at the
government-operated Rock Island Arsenal, located on an island in the
Mississippi River. In September 1953 he enrolled at Augustana College
in Rock Island under the GI Bill education grant. After the completion
of his freshman year in 1954 at Augustana, Herb and his sister Lois
moved to El Paso, Texas. Herb enrolled at Texas Western College now
University of Texas at El Paso as a journalism major. He worked on the
college newspaper, The Prospector, and also wrote for El Burro, the
college humor magazine. He served as editor of The Prospector his
senior year. He pledged the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and lived in
their house near the campus. He worked part time in the newsroom at
KTSM, an El Paso television and radio station. A most wonderful
happening occurred at the beginning of his senior year, when he met and
fell in love with a fellow journalism student, Alberta "Bert" Wareing
of El Paso. They became engaged early in 1957 and were married on July
12, 1957, shortly after Herb graduated with a journalism degree. Herb
continued his employment at KTSM after graduation, covering sports and
writing local newscasts. In the summer of 1959, he was hired as a
technical writer by Thiokol Corporation, an aerospace company beginning
a new plant in Northern Utah. Now with two children, the Blues moved to
Brigham City in August of 1959. During a 20-year career with Thiokol,
Herb wrote and edited a variety of employee and industrial
publications, as well as writing speeches for Thiokol managers. For
several years he was editor of a magazine called Aerospace Facts. His
work consistently received regional and international awards in the
field of industrial publications. In 1974 the Intermountain Business
Communications Association named him Editor of the Year. In 1982 he
received the Hicks-Middagh award as the outstanding ex-student by the
Mass Communications Department at the University of Texas-El Paso, his
alma mater. He was active in various youth activities in Brigham City,
coaching a church basketball team and serving in leadership roles in
his sons' Boy Scout troops. He served on the Brigham City Library Board
for six years, helping upgrade the city's public library. The family
moved to Salt Lake City in 1979 and shortly afterward Herb resigned
from Thiokol. He operated his own business, providing editing and
writing services for various businesses around the area. In 1984 Herb
went to work for Iomega Corporation in Roy, Utah, writing technical
manuals for the computer products they were developing. He retired from
Iomega in 1992. The computer became a feature of his activities, as a
hobby and as a tool for searching for family history information, all
kinds of knowledge, and communicating with family and friends
everywhere. Sports were an enduring passion for Herb from his high
school days on. He closely followed the sports scene and the fortunes
of his favorite teams in many sports, ranging from Illinois and Utah
high school teams to Texas Western (Texas-El Paso) Miners, Utah college
teams, and the Utah Jazz professional basketball team. Basketball was
his first love and for several years he played on amateur teams in
church, city and industrial leagues. He also competed at table tennis
and on the tennis court and at the cribbage board, Herb developed an
early interest and read widely throughout his life. American and
Western history were his favorite literature. A descendant of pioneer
families, he read and researched extensively on the ancestry of his own
and other family lines. He had a great thirst for new things and new
experiences. He was an avid photographer and was never without his
camera at any event, any outing or trip. In his fifties he joined an
amateur painting class and painted a number of paintings that are
displayed in his and his children's homes. His relationship with God
was an integral part of Herb's life. He was a strong supporter of
Alberta and his family in their Catholic faith and was baptized into
the Catholic Church in 1982. An active member of Sacred Heart Parish in
Salt Lake City, he served as an Eucharistic minister and lector, was
chairman of the Parish Council, and for many years participated in
parish social and fund raising efforts. Herb has been dealing with
Inclusion Body Myositis, a progressive neurological disorder since
1992. On Monday, February 13, he entered the hospital and was
subsequently diagnosed with an aggressive, untreatable cancer. He went
home on Friday, February 17, where he could make the 'graceful exit' he
had prayed for.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, February 22, at
Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 174 E. 900 S., Salt Lake City, Utah at
10:00 a.m. Please, no flowers. If you wish to send a memorial gift in
Herb's honor, the family suggests memorial offerings can be made to:
The Nature Conservancy, 800-628-6860, http.//nature.org; Sacred Heart
Parish Development Fund, or the charity of your choice. You may contact
the family at Herb's email address (herbblue@aol.com) or by postal
mail, 1423 South 1000 East, Salt Lake City, Utah 84105.

Obituary of Ivan C. Brooks I
(November 5, 1914 - April 7, 2006)
picture
Ivan C. Brooks, Sr Macomb, IL
It is with great sadness the family of Ivan C. Brooks, Sr.
announces he passed away peacefully in his home on Friday April 7, 2006
at the age of 91. His parents, six brothers, 3 sisters, and his oldest
son, Ivan Jr. predeceased Ivan.
His lovingly caring and dedicated wife and best friend of 38
years, Beryl Brooks, survives him. Ivan is also survived by his son,
Melvin Brooks of Zion, IL; daughters, Marjorie Smith of Kinston, N.C.;
and Laura Jean Brooks of Roanoke, VA. His loving stepchildren Carl
McKee of Plymouth, MN, Raymond Statler of Champlin, MN; and Pam Petri
of Montgomery, IL also survive him. Fourteen (14) grandchildren, great
grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, great and grand nieces and nephews
all over the country, and a host of other relatives and friends further
survive him.
Ivan grew up in Monmouth, IL attending only a few years of
elementary/secondary school. Shortly thereafter he moved to Macomb. He
was so very proud of his accomplishments at Camp Ellis during World War
II. Despite his limited education he was the first and only African
American store manager of one of the PXs. This was at a time when the
Black and White workers did not work together nor commingled much in
any part of the base. At the end of the war, he was given a letter of
commendation from the commanding officer of the base. Ivan was an
African American pioneer in Macomb. He was usually the first Black in
any business he was employed - for example, the now closed Hemp &
Co., and Macomb Milk Products, Co. where he retired after 30 years of
employment. He then operated his own bulk milk tank sales and services
business for several years.
Ivan was well liked, admired and respected by many in Macomb,
both in the Black community and White community. He often worked with
community leaders to help the Black community obtain better housing and
employment opportunities. His community involvements included being
appointed by the mayor to be on the original Fair Housing Board. He was
a self-taught man of many trades. In the 1950’s, he voluntarily wired
electricity into the Leaders’ cabin of the Spring Lake Girl Scout Camp
when others asked to be paid to do the job. He always tried to lend a
helping hand to whoever needed it.
Ivan was a long time active member of Calvary Baptist Church and
later the First Baptist Church on Carroll Street. He was Past Patron of
the Golden Crown Eastern Stars of Monmouth and Past Master of the Blue
Masonic Lodge of Monmouth. He was a 32nd Degree Mason out of Rock
Island, IL. Ivan loved to go camping, travel and play golf. He traveled
to all 4 corners of the United States and into Canada. He played golf
on a regular basis until he was unable to do so. He was a role model to
so many people he touched and will be greatly missed.
There will be a memorial service Wednesday at 11 AM at the First
Baptist Church in Macomb. Pastor Wally Holt will officiate. There will
be no visitation; Cremation has been accorded. Burial of ashes will be
at Oakwood Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to McDonough
District Hospital Hospice Program. We would like to thank all of the
many wonderful people, particularly Becky Semonis, for their care and
support of Ivan through the last years of his life.
