GONE TO THE THRONE ABOVE
Mrs. Maria Farrington Summoned to the Bar of God Saturday Evening, May 31, 1902
Mrs. Maria Farrington died Saturday night, May 31, 1902 at about 10 o'clock, at her home in Chebanse, aged nearly
92 years. For the past few months Mrs. Farrington had been on the decline and was gradually failing in health.
For all these years she had been in the best of health, of unusually strong condition and very active. She was
a woman of great endurance and determination, yet kind and loving, always being willing to lend a willing hand
wherever needed. She always led a simple Christian life and attended church whenever able. In her death Chebanse
loses one of its oldest residents and familiar figures. About a month ago she was taken sick, and from that time
until the death angel came doubt existed as to her recovery. Up to the time of her demise she was conscious of
everything that was being said and done and knew all around her. Mrs. Farrington was a woman who had always labored
hard and diligently, and it was only within the past few years that she retired from active life. She was known
to get up of a morning, do her housework, hitch up a team and go out and follow a plow or cultivator the remainder
of the day. She would start in the fall and husk twenty or thirty acres of corn, thus showing her intense desire
to save and acquired enough of the earthly goods to keep her during the latter years of her life. Had she lived
and worked in accordance as most women of the present day, she undoubtedly would have reached the five score mark.
Maria Taylor was born December 11, 1811 in Indiana. Here she grew to womanhood and in *June 1828 was married to
Banghardt DeWitt. To this union nine children were born, only three of whom are now living. They are: William DeWitt,
of Dakota; Mrs. John (Mary Ann) Dixon of this place and Mrs. Sarah Porteous, of Warren, MN. In 1853 Mr. DeWitt
died, and in 1855 she was united in marriage to William Farrington, who succumbed to death April 6, 1878 at the
age of 52 years. By her union with Mr. Farrington four children were born, two of whom are still living, Mrs. Ezra(Angelina)
David of nearby Sugar Island and Mrs. Wm (Caroline) Barnes, of South Dakota. During her life most of the time
was spent in Illinois at Hannapen, Minonk, Watseka, Kankakee and Chebanse, she having lived in Indiana during the
early years of her life. For twelve years she has been a resident of Chebanse and always lived by herself. The
Funeral was held Monday at 2o'clock from the Congregational church, being conducted by Rev. E.J. Ridings. The church
was filled with sorrowing friends and relatives who had come to pay their last sad respect and take one last look
at the departed. The remains were interred in Evergreen cemetery. Mrs. Sarah Porteous, of Warren, MN, was the only
one of the children from a distance who arrived here in time for the funeral. Mrs. Barnes, of Dakota, arriving
here Monday evening after the burial had taken place.
[Note: *June Pearce makes note that official documents of Dearborn Co., Indiana record the marriage took place
December 1st, 1834. Also, court documents [a declaration by the widow] indicate William Farrington died in his
residence in Otto Twp, Kankakee, IL on April 7, 1877 and that she signed her name with an X. Submitted by elh754@prodigy.net]
