"A Stroll in the Cemeteries"

As we turn aside from the busy cares of life and mingle with the friends we love to associate with, our fellow beings, we are caused to remember those of other days. We wander away to the Brockville burying ground, one of the oldest in the eastern part of the county, thinking that we may interest some of your many readers by giving the names of a few of the many good people who are interred there. The first persons buried there were the wife and child of John Bartley, about the year 1848. These graves are not marked. We omit most of the children only giving the names of those whom from the inscriptions are supposed to have friends or relatives in the county. The names, date of death and age of those buried there are:


Elder Jno. P. Bartley died Dec. 6, 1851, aged 63 years. This venerable man was a brother to Governor Mordeca Bartley, of Ohio, who succeeded his son Thomas to the gubernatorial office.

Thomas B. Clayton, Oct. 7, 1881, 52 years

Rebecca, wife of T.B. Clayton. March 31, 1882, 51 years, suicided by hanging

Malinda Casey, May 16, 1873, 58 years

Benjamin Ferguson, Jan. 11, 1860, 69 years

Nancy, wife of Benjamin Ferguson, Oct. 22, 1866, 72 years

Sarah E., wife of J.F. Madden, 23 years

William Welch, Nov. 18, 1872, 26 years

Israel Benifield, Jan. 8, 1873, 66 years

Sarah, wife of Israel Benifield, Jan. 24, 1873, 64 years

Daniel and Hiram Benifield, twins, occupy one grave. The former died in the army, Sept. 30, 1864, aged 25 years; the latter was killed in an affray in St. Marie township at a horse race by John Pargeon, Sept. 18, 1867, aged 28 years.

Margarett, wife of William B. Bennett, April 1, 1863, 29 years

Laura C., wife of Washington Chapman, March 15, 1870, 21 years

Caroline, wife of George Woehl, March 21, 1879, 34 years.

Selby graveyard, two miles south of this, lie the remains of the following named old friends, whom many of your readers will remember:

Hasty Selby, May 6, 1854, 57 years

Laban Selby, March 16, 1856, 34 years

Joseph J. Selby, June 5, 1854, 33 years

Sarah, wife of James H. Dixon, June 6, 1857, 32 years

Priscilla, wife of Milton Sims, April 26, 1861, 26 years

Martissia, wife and Marto, daughter of Aaron Harlan, died Aug. 13, 1858, aged 45 and 21 years, respectively, buried in one grave.

Elder A.C. Lewis, March 14, 1866, 58 years

John M., son of A.C. and Nancy Lewis, was accidentally killed by a runaway team which he was driving to a harrow, a tooth of which struck him in the forehead over the right eye passing through the head, causing death instantly. His age was 11 years.
